About the Position
The Seasonal Grounds Maintenance Assistant works with our Grounds Team to maintain Mt. Cuba Center's diverse landscape. This role contributes to the care of our woody and herbaceous plantings, lawns, woods, garden features, paths, and roadways, helping to ensure our grounds remain beautiful and accessible for all visitors.
Essential Functions Landscape and Grounds Care & Maintenance- Maintain healthy and attractive turf through mowing, fertilizing, watering, weed‑eating, aerating, and applying compost and compost tea
- Care for woody and herbaceous plantings through weeding, pruning, mulching, and other horticultural activities
- Maintain roads, pathways, and parking areas through surface maintenance, renovations, and removal of leaves, debris, and snow
- Support the Horticulture Division with tree, shrub, and plant maintenance including pruning, planting, transplanting, fertilizing, and vegetation management
- Assist with regular repairs of fences, walls, garden furniture, drains, catch‑basins, bridges, curbing, patios, terraces, courtyards, and other hardscape features
- Maintain tools and equipment through regular repair and servicing activities
- Valid driver's license in good standing
- Ability to safely operate and maintain various hand tools, power tools, vehicles, and engine equipment
- Comfortable working outdoors in varying weather conditions
- Basic computer skills including Microsoft Office Suite
- Self‑motivated with strong attention to detail
- Ability to work independently and adapt to new technology as needed
- Strenuous physical work required
- Regular standing, bending, twisting, stooping, and climbing
- Ability to lift, push, or pull objects over 50 pounds
- Seasonal position limited to 1,000 hours per year (averaging 35‑40 hours per week)
- Standard schedule:
Monday – Friday (alternative schedules may be considered) - Hourly rate: $17.00 per hour
