Position: Public Works Laborer (part-time)

The Laborer position within the Public Works department is responsible for performing a variety of semi‑skilled and unskilled tasks in support of departmental operations. Work is carried out under the general supervision of the Division Supervisor and direct oversight of lead crew members assigned to specific projects. Laborers may be temporarily assigned to any division within the department to provide coverage during employee absences or periods of increased workload.

Successful candidates should demonstrate a general mechanical aptitude and possess the physical stamina and mental focus required to perform manual labor in varying conditions.

Essential Functions
  • Participate in yard waste, refuse, and recycling collection operations
  • Assist with flagging traffic for work zone safety
  • Support concrete and asphalt placement activities
  • Perform signage, guardrail, and pavement marking applications and maintenance
  • Conduct field data collection tasks
  • Carry out general vehicle and equipment cleaning and maintenance
  • Assist with shop organization and cleanup
  • Perform other duties as assigned
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Knowledge
  • Basic math (add, subtract, multiply and divide whole numbers)
  • Traffic laws and rules involved in vehicle and equipment operation
  • Standard safety protocols in the performance of essential functions as well as City policies regarding safe work practices
Skills
  • Use of equipment, machinery and hand/power tools
Abilities
  • Follow written and oral instructions and communicate effectively
  • Understand simple roadmaps and city boundaries
  • Operate hand/power tools and equipment in the performance of manual labor
  • Operate a motor vehicle and related equipment safely in accordance with traffic laws and regulations
  • Perform work in a safe manner
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with fellow City staff, associates, contractors and the general public
  • Perform relatively heavy manual work for extended periods of time and withstand exposure to variable weather conditions
  • Manual labor performed in an outdoor environment; may include working in adverse weather, vehicular traffic, and hazards involving power tools, chemicals and materials
  • Clear speech and hearing, and sufficient visual acuity for written instructions
  • Manual dexterity for operating hand and power tools
  • Strength to lift and carry objects up to fifty (50) pounds for varying distances
  • Physical mobility, stamina, flexibility and balance for maintenance and repair tasks in outdoor environments at varying temperatures
  • Ability to endure prolonged exposure to varying temperatures (heat in summer, wind/wet in winter)
  • Minimum of 18 years of age at time of appointment
  • Possession of a valid State of Ohio driver’s license with an acceptable driving record

The regular workweek for this part‑time position will be up to 30 hours per week. This position is part of the Part Time, Intermittent and Seasonal Pay Plan. Details about the compensation and benefits for this position can be found in the agreement by clicking here.
