Position: Driver (Part-Time)

Apply for the Driver (Part-Time) role in Delaware County, Ohio

Hours of Operation: 4:30 a.m. – 9:30 p.m., Monday–Friday, and 7:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., Saturday.

Individual is responsible for driving public transit vehicles, including vans and buses. They transport passengers to specific locations and report to the Road Supervisor.

Starting pay rate: $20.88 per hour.

Job Standards

A High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent work experience.

Licensure and Certification Requirements
  • Must possess a valid Driver’s License with an acceptable driving record.
  • Successful completion of previous employment verification and criminal background investigation.
  • Successful completion of a post‑offer Department of Transportation (Use the "Apply for this Job" box below). examination, including drug and alcohol screening. Employees must continue to meet driver fitness standards as determined by the Job Essential Functions.
Essential Functions
  • Transport passengers to various locations within Delaware County and adjacent counties.
  • Transport passengers for arranged special trips as necessary.
  • Communicate with dispatcher and/or follow pre‑arranged trip manifest to determine passenger pick‑up and drop‑off sites.
  • Assist passengers, including elderly, disabled, and medically fragile passengers, both into and out of facilities and vehicles.
  • Secure, load, and unload wheelchairs for passengers as required.
  • Clean exterior and interior of vehicle as needed.
  • Complete driver’s manifest and trip verification records daily.
  • Inspect vehicles regularly for maintenance and repair needs.
  • Perform minor vehicle maintenance as necessary, including topping off fluids and changing light bulbs.
  • Determine maintenance or repair needs and coordinate with DCT staff, delivering vehicles for maintenance or repair when necessary.
  • Perform duties in accordance with local, state, and federal laws and regulations and employer policies.
  • Successfully complete initial training program and retraining programs, and classes as assigned.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor(s).
Skills and Knowledge

Equipment: Ability to operate passenger transit vehicles based on current license, wheelchair lift, power washer, air compressor, hand tools, computer, and personal electronic devices.

Critical Skills/Expertise:

  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local requirements for van/bus driving.
  • Knowledge of Bureau of Motor Vehicle traffic laws, defensive driving, and vehicle safety.
  • Ability to adhere to office policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of preventative maintenance measures for buses/vans.
  • Completion of annual training on blood‑borne pathogen procedures and sanitation of bodily fluids.
  • Knowledge of the Delaware County area, including map reading and navigating unfamiliar areas.
  • Ability to operate a van or bus in inclement weather conditions.
  • Ability to read and understand electronic manifests to determine specific bus stops and instructions.
  • Knowledge of wheelchair structure and operation.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Understanding and following oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to work effectively with clients and customers who may be upset or distressed.
  • Ability to work under pressure and interact with coworkers, supervisors, and many departments.
Responsibility

Individual is given general direction with established practices and clear‑cut policies. Work is performed under moderate supervision with relatively complete instructions. Errors may cause delays or financial loss; thus a moderate degree of care and skill is required to protect equipment and prevent injury.

Physical Effort

This role requires the ability to lift 20‑50 pounds occasionally and 10‑25 pounds frequently. Reasonable accommodations may be made for employees with disabilities.
