The Laborer position within the Public Works department is responsible for performing a variety of semi-skilled and unskilled tasks in support of departmental operations. Work is carried out under the general supervision of the Division Supervisor and the direct oversight of lead crew members assigned to specific projects. Laborers may be temporarily assigned to any division within the department to provide coverage during employee absences or periods of increased workload.
Successful candidates should demonstrate a general mechanical aptitude and possess the physical stamina and mental focus required to perform manual labor in varying conditions.
Essential Functions: For purposes of 42 USC 12101
Knowledge
- Basic math (ex: ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide whole numbers)
- Traffic laws and rules involved in vehicle and equipment operation
- Standard safety protocols in the performance of essential functions as well as City policies regarding safe work practices
- Use of equipment, machinery and hand/power tools
- Follow written and oral instructions and to communicate effectively
- Understand simple roadmaps and city boundaries
- Operate hand/power tools and equipment in the performance of manual labor
- Operate a motor vehicle and related equipment in a skilled and safe manner and in accordance with traffic laws and regulations
- Perform work in a safe manner
- Develop and maintain effective working relationships with fellow City staff, associates, contractors and the general public
- Perform relatively heavy manual work for extended periods of time, and to withstand exposure to variable weather conditions
The regular workweek for this part-time position will be up to 30 hours per week. This position is part of the Part Time, Intermittent and Seasonal Pay Plan. Details about the compensation and benefits for this position can be found in the agreement by .
