Systems Engineer I

Entry‑level position performing technical work analyzing, implementing, and maintaining computer hardware, operating system software, data storage, and database management systems in a complex multi‑system environment.

Responsibilities
  • Determine root cause of issues and communicate with the appropriate parties, notifying management of escalation as needed.
  • Develop and maintain technical documentation, including system diagrams, configuration records, and standard operating procedures.
  • Perform system monitoring; verify the integrity and availability of systems.
  • Perform system performance tuning and optimize resource utilization.
  • Perform backup operations, ensuring successful and recoverable backups; manage inventory and physical storage and security of backup media.
  • Perform operating system updates, patches, and configuration changes.
  • Perform hardware and software upgrades and migrations.
  • Perform system installation and recovery operations on a 24x7x365 basis.
  • Perform decommissioning of systems.
  • Provide technical expertise and assistance to other Information Technology staff.
  • Interface with vendor technical representatives.
  • Attend work on a continuous and regular basis.
  • Respond to emergency situations.
  • Adhere to Federal, State, County, and Local ordinances.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Systems Engineer II

Progressively responsible position performing technical work planning, implementing, analyzing, designing, and maintaining computer hardware, operating system software, data storage, and database management systems in a complex multi‑system environment. Responsibilities include mentoring other Systems Engineers.

Responsibilities
  • Perform all duties of a Systems Engineer I.
  • Define and allocate disk storage for file and database systems on servers and storage area networks (SAN).
  • Train operational staff and automate routine operational and maintenance tasks.
  • Develop, document, and enhance system administration procedures.
  • Prepare detailed technical analysis, recommendations, project plans, and cost projections for server and SAN projects.
  • Maintain high level of technical knowledge of server hardware, SANs, operating system software, and database management software.
  • Design and implement high‑availability hardware and software systems.
  • Analyze user requirements, developer needs, and technical constraints.
  • Implement solutions across multiple operating systems.
  • Integrate new technologies into the existing data center environment.
  • Establish Service Level Agreements with customers.
  • Communicate with customers regarding ongoing technical issues affecting performance.
  • Mentor and guide other Systems Engineers.
  • Assist in development of strategic plans for growth and resiliency.
  • Identify key success factors and necessary resources.
  • Attend work on a continuous and regular basis.
  • Respond to emergency situations.
  • Adhere to Federal, State, County, and Local ordinances.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Salary

Systems Engineer I: $60,260.00
Systems Engineer II: $63,873.00

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Mathematics, Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, or related field.
  • Systems Engineer I: 1 year of responsible experience in systems and/or database administration.
  • Systems Engineer II: 3 years of responsible experience in systems and/or database administration.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license.
  • Must obtain a valid Florida driver's license within 30 days of appointment and maintain thereafter.
  • Comparable amount of training, education, or experience may be substituted for the minimum requirements.

  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Ability to work under stressful conditions.
  • Must be able to relocate to other county locations based upon operational needs.

Mental Demands:
Ability to read and comprehend technical and professional writing, perform advanced mathematical functions, write reports, memos, and procedures, speak clearly and concisely, analyze data and develop conclusions, identify and resolve problems, think logically and show attention to detail.

Physical Demands:
Able to lift, push, pull, and/or carry 25 pounds; visual acuity (depth perception, peripheral vision) necessary to operate a motorized vehicle.
