The Android Engineering Manager leads mobile engineering for Fortune Brands' Android applications while managing a team of Android engineers across multiple product lines. This role balances people leadership with technical ownership—building high-performing teams through rigorous performance management while driving Android platform excellence through craft mastery and strategic technical leadership.
POSITION LOCATIONThis position is eligible for a hybrid schedule based out of Deerfield, IL. Onsite days are Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday.
COREACCOUNTABILITIES
1. Mission-Focused Leadership
Execute organizational decisions with full commitment while connecting team work to organizational purpose and Fortune Brands' mission.
2. Functional Excellence Through Craft Mastery & People Engagement
Define and champion Android engineering standards through practitioner involvement. Conduct fortnightly 1:1s starting with "How are you doing?" and ending with "How can I help?" Build genuine relationships and create psychological safety for the team.
3. Performance Management & Development
Provide continuous honest feedback, differentiate performance levels appropriately, invest most time in high performers, coach solid performers toward growth, and address underperformance decisively.
4. Support & Escalation Management
Respond to escalations with solutions not blame, deploy capabilities to resolve critical issues, and create psychological safety while maintaining accountability.
5. Talent Optimization
Match engineers' strengths to role requirements, focus development on building strengths not fixing weaknesses, and help engineers build cross-organizational relationships.
6. Creating Organizational Capability
Develop team independence, transfer knowledge deliberately, identify and develop future leaders, and measure success by team function without constant intervention.
TECHNICAL RESPONSIBILITIESAndroid Platform Ownership
Own Android delivery across product lines, serve as Android subject matter expert, drive platform initiatives (architecture modernization, Jetpack Compose adoption, performance optimization), and establish Android standards and patterns.
Engineering Excellence & Quality
Integrate quality metrics into dashboards, champion comprehensive testing practices, drive CI/CD improvements, and establish quality indicators (crash-free rates, performance benchmarks).
Cross-Platform Collaboration
Collaborate with iOS, Backend, Firmware, QA, and Design teams to ensure platform parity, resolve dependencies, and deliver cohesive customer experiences.
Technical Leadership
Provide hands-on contribution when needed, conduct architectural code reviews, mentor on advanced Android topics, and stay current with Android ecosystem evolution.

- Cross-Functional Partnership: Effectiveness of collaboration across iOS, Backend, Product, Design, and QA
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent experience
- 8+ years software engineering experience with 5+ years focused on Android development
- 2+ years engineering management experience with direct reports
- Expert-level proficiency in Kotlin, Android SDK, and modern Android development (Jetpack Compose, Coroutines, Flow)
- Deep understanding of Android architecture patterns (MVVM, MVI) and dependency injection (Dagger, Hilt)
- Experience with Android testing frameworks, CI/CD pipelines, and mobile performance optimization
- Proven track record coaching engineers and improving team execution
- Excellent cross-functional collaboration and communication skills
- Experience managing Android teams across multiple product lines
- Deep knowledge of Android security best practices
- Familiarity with IoT, Bluetooth LE, or connected device integration
- Background in mobile analytics, crash reporting, and monitoring tools (Firebase, Crashlytics)
