Position: Summer Camp Counselor (22 Positions)

Performs entry level work to assist in overseeing programs, athletics and activities of children ages 5 through 15 during the summer camp program. This is a temporary position responsible for planning, assisting and actively participating in daily indoor & outdoor recreational activities such as arts & crafts, dance, sports/athletics, fitness, drama, theater, music, etc., and special events.

This position works under the direction of the Site Supervisor Assistant Site Supervisor to provide well‑organized, varied activities and continuous supervision of campers at assigned job sites. We are seeking enthusiastic, energetic individuals to join our team and bring exciting programs to campers, creating a safe and fun experience for the youth of Deerfield Beach.

Essential Functions

Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of this class as necessary.

  • Lead specific recreational and athletic programs in accordance with the interests and needs of the public.
  • Supervise and provide a safe and healthy environment to ensure the operation of a quality children’s program.
  • Be responsible for the general safety, development, growth, and achievement of participants and report concerns to leadership.
  • Organize, lead and provide high quality a variety of small and large group activities each week, including crafts, nature, songs, games, ceremonies, swimming, Family Night, and bus activities.
  • Manage children’s behavior, act as a role model, and mentor. Model constructive participation in daily activities and field trips.
  • Lead children through day‑to‑day camp operations, including set up and clean‑up of equipment and supplies.
  • Communicate with campers’ parents/guardians regarding experiences and report concerns to leadership.
  • Ensure all children are accounted for onsite and on field trips; conduct headcounts.
  • Know and enforce all safety guidelines associated with the camp and program areas.
  • Ensure the camp site is presentable at all times and kept clean, organized, and litter‑free.
  • Interact effectively and professionally with fellow employees, participants, supervisors, staff, instructors, and the public.
  • Maintain accurate program records, including incident reports, logbook documentation, and daily attendance.
  • Know and understand all emergency procedures associated with the camp program.
  • Maintain punctuality and regular attendance.
  • Perform special projects and other duties as assigned.
  • Ensure full attendance for the nine‑week summer and all staff meetings and training sessions.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
  • Minimum 3 months verifiable work/volunteer experience supervising children ages 5–15 in a school, camp, or recreational setting in arts & crafts, dance, sports, drama, music, or athletics.
  • Must be 16 years or older.
  • First Aid and CPR Certification mandatory and must be current throughout summer camp.

  • Positive role model attitude, punctuality, respect, and sportsmanship.
  • Good interpersonal skills with employees, participants, and parents/guardians.
Physical Demands

Physical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement.

  • Light to medium work involving walking or standing virtually all of the time; regularly exert 20–50 pounds of force.
Work Environment
  • Involves routine and frequent exposure to:
    • Bright/dim light; dust and pollen.
    • Extreme heat and/or cold; wet or humid conditions.
Work Hours

Sunday–Saturday with variable shifts between 7:30 am–10:00 pm. Required to work nights, weekends, and holidays to meet business/program needs. Hours may change based on operational needs.
