Waste Characterization Services (WCS) Technical Officers provide waste characterization data to meet the customer's needs to assess hazards associated with potential waste before and during waste generation and decommissioning activities. What will you be doing!
  • Conducting Waste Characterization Operations and Analysis
  • Preparing, maintaining, and managing field instrumentation and equipment to ensure they are in good working order, meet quality control requirements, and are regularly maintained.
  • Performing field operations of various waste characterization instruments which includes preparing work areas for the operation, setting up the instruments and equipment (including setting up software and programs for the analysis) and performing the counting.
  • Organizing and analyzing collected data. Performs/interprets analysis of the data collected. Prepares supporting data and memos summarizing the information collected. Supports the preparation of technical reports and other client deliverables.
  • Maintaining clear and accurate logs documenting all information associated with Waste Characterization Operations.
  • Making recommendations based on analysis of data collected and communicating results to various stakeholders.
  • Acting as a technical expert/resource in waste characterization techniques
  • Maintaining qualifications on all relevant instruments within the Waste Characterization portfolio.
  • Continuously seeking new technology and methods to improve waste characterization operations allowing the department to adapt to the ever-changing needs of CNL’s operations.
  • Training and mentoring junior WCS Technical Officers on instrument operation, troubleshooting, and execution of analysis methods and data collection.
  • Performing critical technical reviews of reports prepared by other technologists ensuring data is correct and interpretations are sound and well documented.
  • Participating in focused technical training on instrument operation and configuration to troubleshoot minor instrument issues and/or understand the limitations of instruments.
  • Participating in conferences and attending technical seminars to seek out alternative techniques and instruments for consideration to use within the branch.
  • Maintaining inventory of waste packages and samples and controls chain of custody.
  • Receiving, logging, and tracking the inventory of waste packages within the waste characterization facility.
  • Maintaining accurate records tracking the movement of waste through various stages of waste characterization and verification.
  • Maintaining good housekeeping of the waste characterization facilities.
  • Other duties as assigned by your manager.
What we are looking for:
Education
  • Graduation from a recognized institute of advanced technology, or equivalent formal education, in a field relevant to the position and normally has two to three years of pertinent technological experience. OR
  • Secondary School Graduation Diploma or equivalent and normally has five to eight years of pertinent and progressive experience or the equivalent in experience, additional education and/or training.
Experience
  • Experience with techniques/instruments related to measuring various parameters and/or collecting data.
  • Using radiation detection instruments and techniques such as gamma spectrometers, NaI detectors, gamma cameras, XRF, as well as other analytical instruments including pH meters, mercury analyzers, etc.
  • Collecting various field samples and various sampling techniques.
  • Industrial operations including heavy equipment activities (ie. Operation of forklifts).
  • Nuclear operations, specifically in the areas of Waste Management, Environmental Remediation, Decommissioning, and Transportation of Dangerous Goods, is considered an asset.
