Environmental Compliance, Safety Engineer
Performs and coordinates advanced transportation engineering operations and maintenance support work such as construction and complex maintenance contract inspection; light and heavy equipment operation; roadway maintenance; traffic control; helping the public during emergency situations; and training other employees. May serve as a lead worker. Employees at this level establish their own work plan and priorities to meet set objectives. Issues are rarely referred to the supervisor but are handled at the occurrence.
EssentialDuties
- May serve as a lead worker and the related tasks.
- May train other employees.
- Performs detail design and quantity checks for plans, specifications, and estimate (PS&E).
- Performs pavement evaluations and operates data collection equipment.
- Prepares plans, specifications, and estimate (PS&E) using automated programs; reviews plans, enters data and updates, stores and maintains PS&E documents and files.
- Researches plan sets and reviews proposed construction plans, specifications, and estimate (PS&E) and supporting documents for accuracy and completeness to ensure compliance with state and federal laws, policies, procedures and design guidelines.
- Reviews and assists in the development of traffic control plans, coordinates with law enforcement agencies, monitors lane closures at construction sites, documents changes in the traffic control setup and coordinates with the Public Information Officer.
- Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
Education
:
High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies.
Experience
: 4 years in transportation engineering support, roadway maintenance, construction inspection, or related work experience. (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated parttime equivalent).
Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis.

Licenses and Certifications- Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.

- Using computers, applicable programs, applications, and systems
- Maintaining a safe and effective working relationship with others
- Subject to environmental conditions; protection from weather but not temperature changes

- Required to wear protective gear‑respirator, hard hat, or other device
- Light work:
Lift up to 20 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 10 lbs - Balancing‑walking, standing, crouching on various surfaces without falling

- Hearing‑perceive sound at normal speaking levels; receive information by oral communication
- Repetitive Motion‑substantial movements of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers
- Close Visual Acuity‑work includes data/figures; view a computer screen; extensive reading

- This job has been identified as physically demanding and will require a pre-employment physical.
- Must pass a drug test prior to employment for safety impact positions. This is a Safety Impact position and will be subject to random drug testing.

- Required to work weekends and holidays.
