Motherhood Beyond Bars (MBB) is looking for a compassionate, knowledgeable Certified Childbirth Educator (CBE) or someone with comparable relevant experience to join our Maternal Incarceration and Opioid Reduction Program. In this role, you'll bring evidence-based, judgment-free prenatal and postnatal education to women in county jails, helping them prepare for childbirth, care for their babies, and take steps toward healthier futures.
What you’ll do:
- Teach weekly group classes inside county jail facilities on pregnancy, labor and delivery, newborn care, and postpartum recovery.
- Provide encouragement, guidance, and emotional support to expectant and new mothers.
- Share easy-to-understand educational materials and resources provided by MBB.
- Talk about healthy lifestyle choices (nutrition, exercise, mental health) and why they matter for moms and babies.
- Maintain regular communication with the Maternal Incarceration Project Manager by submitting post-class intake forms and weekly updates to better serve participants and their families.
- Shop for snacks for classes when requested (expenses reimbursed; MBB will provide guidance).
- Work closely with our team to meet the unique needs of each family.
- Stay current on best practices in perinatal health.
Qualifications:
- Certified CBE and/or other relevant perinatal health experience.
- Able to keep a consistent weekly class time open in the assigned counties, even if a class isn’t needed that week.
- Willingness to teach in person or virtually, as some facilities currently allow only virtual classes.
- Strong communication skills and commitment to regular updates with the MBB leadership team.
- Genuine interest in serving incarcerated women and commitment to completing required MBB team training.
- Ability to build trust with jail administrators and collaborate effectively within a carceral setting.
- Healthy boundaries and self-awareness when working in a carceral environment.
- Flexibility to adapt and teach on-the-fly— jail classes are rarely perfectly linear.
Motherhood Beyond Bars will provide:
- Childbirth curriculum written specifically for incarcerated populations.
- Teaching tools, training, ongoing support, and supplies as needed.
Details & Logistics:
- $100 per class (each class is 1–2 hours).
- Facility-required background checks, fingerprinting, and training may apply (expenses reimbursed by MBB).
- Parking fees, snack costs, and some other supply expenses reimbursed.
- Classes are scheduled in advance; you’ll submit a monthly invoice for payment.
- Quick reporting is part of the role to help our team track impact and follow up with participants.
If you’re passionate about maternal and infant health, comfortable working inside correctional facilities, and willing to travel to Cobb, Douglas, Carroll, Bibb, Polk, Floyd, and Cherokee counties, we’d love to hear from you.
