Field Service Technician
Job SummaryPerforms electrical apparatus work onsite at customers facilities. This includes electrical testing, preventative maintenance, commissioning, upgrades, and repairs to electrical apparatus.
Duties and Responsibilities- Assist in the execution of mechanical and electrical tasks on equipment utilized in power transmission, distribution, and generation at customer facilities.
- Read and interpret manuals, schematics, and wiring diagrams to troubleshoot and solve equipment problems.
- Troubleshoot, repair, replace, and clean all components in a substation.
- Assist in the following tests:
Transformer Testing – Power factor, TTR, insulation resistance, SFRA, winding resistance, partial discharge, and leakage reactance;
Cable Testing – Insulation resistance, tan delta, hipot, TDR, partial discharge, and cable thumper;
Circuit Breaker Testing – Insulation resistance, contact resistance, power factor, breaker timing, SF6 gas analysis, CT testing, high current testing, secondary injection testing, and vacuum bottle integrity testing. - Participate in the installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical equipment.
- Participates in safety meetings and training.

- Familiarize with industry standards such as NETA, NFPA 70E, OSHA compliance standards, safety laws, and DOT regulations.
- Ability to assist in complex mechanical and electrical problems.
- Strong communication and problem-solving skills.
- Must have strong PC skills including email, internet, data entry, and Microsoft Office.
- Ability to multitask, prioritize, and work well under pressure to meet goals and deadlines.
- Doble DTAF and Power DB knowledge is preferred; training will be provided.
- Demonstrates punctuality for daily work assignments, meetings, training, etc.
- Demonstrates organizational skills including on-time reporting of time and expenses, weekly status reports, and other documentation and reporting requirements.
- Maintains tools, test equipment, and vehicles in clean and organized condition and up to date with service and calibrations.
- Must be willing to relocate within 60 miles of the hiring regional office.
- Corporate hours are Monday–Friday, 7:30am–4:30pm; hours outside this range may be required depending on scope of work.
- Work involves proximity to live electrical substations; safety is required.
- Ability to work overtime including nights, weekends, and some holidays.
- Ability to travel on overnight, multi-day, out-of-town projects.
- Rotate emergency on-call duty and respond to customer emergencies in a timely manner.
- Requires a High School Diploma or GED. Bachelor’s or Associate Degree in Electrical/Electronic Technology, or Military experience is preferred but not required.
- Experience in electrical substation testing, construction, maintenance, troubleshooting, assembly, and commissioning is preferred, but not required.
- This role is considered introductory to the industry. Other useful experience includes mechanical aptitude and a willingness to learn.
- Must pass a pre-employment criminal background check and motor vehicle check.
- Must pass a pre-employment drug and alcohol test, as well as periodic, unannounced random testing.
- Must have a valid driver’s license and be willing to obtain an endorsement to operate a combined vehicle weight up to 26k lbs.
- Must be able to lift and maneuver at least 50 lbs.
- Willingness to obtain a company-paid TWIC card, OSHA 10/30 hour, MSHA, NFPA 70E, and CPR training.
