Position Overview

We are seeking a motivated, detail-oriented intern to join our team at the Ford Rouge Dearborn Truck Plant in Dearborn,MI. This internship provides hands‑on experience in safety, compliance, waste management, and environmental operations within a dynamic automotive manufacturing environment. The intern will support daily EHS activities, compliance monitoring, documentation, waste and recycling initiatives, inspections, and engagement with cross-functional teams. This is an ideal opportunity for students beginning a career in Safety, Environmental Management, Sustainability, or Industrial Operations.

Responsibilities

and Job duties
  • Conduct daily walkthroughs of facility areas to identify hazards and monitor safe work practices.
  • Document findings using digital inspection tools or paper forms.
  • Communicate urgent hazards promptly to supervisors and appropriate personnel.
  • Inspect emergency and response kits, including:
    • First Aid kits (ANSI/ISEA Z308.1)
    • Spill response kits
    • Fire extinguisher
    • Facility vehicles
  • Ensure all kits/equipment are stocked, accessible, and properly labeled, report deficiencies and coordinate replenishment.
  • Check PPE stations for cleanliness, organization, and stock levels; support PPE sizing, distribution, and ordering.
  • Assist with maintaining accurate inspection logs, corrective action reports, and general EHS documentation.
  • Support incident investigations through photo collection, witness statements, and environmental observations.
  • Assist in preparing toolbox talks, safety communications, and new-hire safety orientations.
  • Participate in root cause analyses and hazard trend reviews; recommend ergonomic and safety enhancements.
  • Assist with shipment oversight, including waste manifesting and documentation control.
  • Conduct weekly and monthly environmental inspections in accordance with regulatory and corporate requirements.
  • Review waste profiles and ensure compliance with applicable regulations.
  • Support the waste management hierarchy, including improvements to recycling and waste segregation systems.
  • Help manage and track the oily absorbents rewash program.
  • Update recycling stations and signage to improve waste segregation and employee awareness.
  • Explore recycling options for onsite plastics and other materials.
  • Organize paperwork, environmental records, and compliance documents.
  • Assist with EHS dashboards and performance metrics using Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and other digital tools.
  • Support the development and updating of EHS documents (SOPs, JSAs/JHAs, checklists, training materials).
  • Maintain confidential handling of safety, environmental, and employee information.
  • Provide general support for special projects and continuous improvement initiatives.
Requirements and Qualifications
  • Currently pursuing or recently completed coursework in Occupational Safety, Environmental Health, Industrial Hygiene, Public Health, Engineering, Sustainability, Environmental Science, or related fields. (Equivalent experience or demonstrated interest in EHS is also welcome.)
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills; able to collaborate respectfully with diverse teams.
  • Ability to walk, stand, and navigate active industrial environments.
  • Basic proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) or digital inspection tools (training provided).
  • Strong observational skills and attention to documentation accuracy.
  • Reliable follow-through on assigned tasks, corrective actions, and reporting.
  • Commitment to hazard recognition, prevention, and continuous improvement.
