Position: ITAR Consultant / Legal Expert

Position Title: ITAR Consultant / Legal Expert

Overview

We are seeking an experienced ITAR Consultant / Legal Expert to provide authoritative guidance on compliance with the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) and related U.S. export control laws. This role will ensure our organization properly categorizes controlled items, determines licensing requirements, and secures necessary authorizations for both physical shipments and the transmission of controlled technical data. The ideal candidate will have deep familiarity with ITAR processes, exemptions, and licensing procedures, as well as a proven ability to communicate regulatory requirements clearly across operational, sales, and legal teams.

Key Responsibilities
  • Accurately identify and categorize products, components, and technical data under the U.S. Munitions List (USML).
  • Determine whether export licenses are required for shipments or data transfers to foreign persons or entities, including U.S. government personnel outside CONUS.
  • Prepare, submit, and track ITAR license applications, ensuring compliance with all requirements from the Directorate of Defense Trade Controls (DDTC).
  • Assess potential exemptions; verify and document formal authorization from approved sources before proceeding without a license.
  • Interpret relevant sections of ITAR, the Federal Acquisition Regulation (FAR), and related statutes to guide business decisions and minimize compliance risk.
  • Maintain complete and accurate records to demonstrate compliance during government audits; develop and improve internal procedures to prevent violations.
  • Provide targeted compliance training for staff, tailored to operational and sales functions to avoid shipment delays and order execution issues.
  • Collaborate with legal, operations, and customer-facing teams to resolve export compliance challenges efficiently while maintaining regulatory integrity.
Qualifications
  • Proven experience in ITAR compliance, preferably in a legal or consulting capacity.
  • In-depth knowledge of U.S. export controls, including ITAR, EAR, and related FAR clauses.
  • Experience managing license applications and working with the DDTC.
  • Ability to interpret and apply complex regulations to real-world scenarios.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills for both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Experience providing compliance training is a plus.
  • Juris Doctor (JD) or legal background preferred but not required with equivalent experience.
Why This Role Matters

This position is critical in protecting the organization from regulatory violations, preventing costly shipment delays, and ensuring we maintain the trust of U.S. government and defense customers.
