Job Description

Identifies reportable and non-reportable cancer registry candidates in compliance with federal, state, and national accrediting body standards. Performs and maintains proper coding and documentation of all non-reportable cases according to regulatory requirements. Utilizes patient medical records to designate cases as analytical or non-analytic for the abstracting team. Demonstrates understanding of medical terminology related to anatomy, physiology, oncology, pathology, radiology, and cancer treatment modalities.

Interprets components of a patient’s medical history, including radiology and pathology reports, operative reports, history and physical reports, physician and nurses’ notes, discharge summaries, treatment protocol descriptions, and physician s letters. Maintains a professional work environment conducive to achieving accuracy and productivity goals. Manages multiple priorities effectively and meets registry-established deadlines. Seeks opportunities to maintain clinical expertise and incorporates the latest developments and trends related to the cancer registry and national clinical guidelines.

Attends educational, registry, or other conferences and training as appropriate. Works closely with the abstracting team Case Acquisition Lead to determine the class of case. Adheres to hospital policy for protecting patient confidentiality per HIPAA guidelines. Participates in special projects or initiatives to improve the quality and outcomes for patients in the Cancer Institute. Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualification Requirements

The expertise and experiences you’ll need to succeed:

  • High School Grad or Equiv (Required)
  • Oncology Data Specialist (ODS) - EV Accredited Issuing Body

Pay Range
$21.73 - $40.42
