The Student Success & Academic Advisor position is a twelve-month, contract position located in the Academic Resource Center (ARC). This position reports to the Associate Director of Advising & Success. The Student Success & Academic Advisor provides comprehensive academic advising for first‑year students in various majors. The Advisor considers students’ academic needs, goals, interests, and prior education to help develop a plan for student success, and will guide the students to various campus resources, when needed, to provide academic and/or psychological counseling.

The Advisor manages advising caseload through accurate record‑keeping and maintains partnerships with assigned academic departments. In addition, the Advisor assists with oversight of programming for one of several affinity groups of students.

Education Required Experience Required
  • Knowledge of undergraduate students, student development, career counseling, academic advising, student retention, student success strategies and services, educational theory and practice, FERPA regulations and other ethical/legal issues relevant to advising, program and curriculum assessment, and academic and administrative policies/procedures
  • Knowledge of the curricula and programs offered at the College
  • Knowledge of and commitment to the College mission and aims
  • Ability to think critically, produce and analyze reports and proposals, and resolve organizational and individual programs in collaboration with other learning professionals as appropriate
  • Excellent planning, leadership, supervisory, and collaboration skills
  • Familiarity with (or willingness to become familiar with) the National Association of Academic Advising (NACADA) core values and best practices
  • Willingness to expand and contribute to the scholarship of professional advising via presentations or articles in the field of higher education – specifically student success
Duties
  • Provide quality academic advisement to assigned caseload of first‑year freshman of various academic majors during academic year and orientation
  • Provide designated office walk‑in hours, appointment times, and monitor email
  • Counsel students on academic challenges, success planning, and program progress
  • Assess individual student needs and make appropriate referrals to other campus services and resources as needed
  • Aid students in establishing realistic and attainable academic goals
  • Develop and maintain a strong communication line with academic departments and various student support divisions
  • Maintain student records including creating and updating accurate four‑year degree plans for advising caseload.
  • Participate in the planning and implementation of registration, fall and spring orientation, Admissions events, or any other College planning sessions or programs as needed
  • Support advisees assigned to Academic Probation towards academic improvement through success coaching and intervention
  • Oversee programming for assigned affinity group (Commuters, National Society for Leadership and Success, First‑Generation Students, etc.)
  • Supervise and support student leadership team/interns associated with affinity group for program development
  • Other duties as assigned
