Job Description

SUMMARY

The School Resource Officer (SRO) supports and facilitates the educational process within the Dayton Public School System by providing a safe and secure environment through building and establishing meaningful relationships with students and staff and proactively interacting with the school community to ensure the enforcement of city and state laws, preservation of public order, protection of life and the prevention, detection, or investigation of crime.

The incumbent will work effectively with students, parents, school personnel and community agencies to support teaching and learning in the schools. The School Resource Officer (SRO) will patrol district property to protect students, staff and visitors from physical harm and prevent loss to district property resulting from criminal activity.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

(Incumbent performs a majority of the following duties)

  • Patrol district property for suspicious activity, unauthorized persons on campus, or unauthorized entry after hours.
  • Allow no person to trespass, loiter or remain in the building or upon the grounds of a Board of Education building in violation of the rules and regulations of the Dayton Public Schools and the ordinances of the City of Dayton.
  • Discourage large or unauthorized crowds from gathering to disrupt the educational process.
  • Circulate in areas identified as potential trouble spots.
  • Give directions and information to staff, students, and visitors.
  • Assist school officials in assuring that persons do not enter or remain in school buildings without proper credentials.
  • Be available for students and school personnel in case of hostile and violent behavior.
  • Operate a two-way radio
  • Other duties as established by the Security Office Liaison and the building administrator.

The role of the Security Resource Officer is that of a peace officer. It is not intended that he/she become the school disciplinarian. When the Resource Officer is involved in disciplinary situations the theory of reasonableness, physical restraint, and fairness must be applied. Security Resource Officers are empowered to investigate, detain and arrest. The responsibility for constructive behavior of students lies with the entire school community.

School discipline is and should remain the responsibility of the school. Security Resource Officers are police trained school personnel. They are employed by the Dayton Public Schools to assist students, teachers and administrators in maintaining an open climate for learning in all buildings. Security Resource Officers are directly responsible to the Executive Director of Safety and Security. They work under the supervision of the designated building administrator and the Security Office Liaison in accordance with board policies and the negotiated contract.

QUALIFICATIONS

Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. citizen or have the legal right to work in the U.S.

Verifications

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Completion of a minimum of 120-hours police training approved by the Ohio Attorney General
  • Any combination of education and experience equivalent to HS graduation, a minimum of two-years’ experience in a security related field or in law enforcement, and possess/possessed/ or able to attain Ohio Peace Officer Training Council Peace Officer certificate
  • Qualification for City of Dayton Special Institutional Police License

  • Ability to exercise good judgment and make sound decisions.
