Job Summary
Under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse, provides nursing care within the scope of licensure for assigned patients according to established nursing standards and hospital policies and procedures.
Essential Functions
- Under direct supervision of a Registered Nurse, administer medication, perform treatments, and patient care responsibilities as prescribed.
- Consult with and keep the Registered Nurse informed of activities, symptoms, reactions, and changes in the patient’s condition.
- Provide appropriate pain management techniques and educate the patient and family regarding pain management.
- Administer medication following the five rights of medication administration within scope of practice.
- Assist with rehabilitation and treatment of patients in accordance with the medical plan of care, updating and revising the plan under the supervision of a Registered Nurse.
- Assist physicians with examinations, treatments, and special procedures, performing services requiring technical and manual skills as directed by the Registered Nurse.
- Treat patients and their families with respect and dignity, addressing psychosocial, cultural, ethnic, and religious/spiritual needs.
- Interact professionally with patients and families, involving them in the plan of care.
- Identify and address psychosocial needs, communicating with Social Services/Discharge Planner regarding in-hospital and post-discharge needs.
- Interpret data about the patient’s status to identify age-specific needs and provide appropriate care.
- Perform all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes safety and reduces errors.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities/Expectations
- Knowledge of medications and their correct administration based on patient age and clinical condition.
- Basic computer knowledge.
- Ability to organize tasks, develop action plans, set priorities, and function under stress.
- Maintain good working relationships within and outside the department.
- Regular attendance is required.
- Fluent in reading, writing, and speaking English.
- Travel requirement: 0%.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education
- Graduate of an accredited program for licensed vocational/practical nurses.
Licenses/Certifications
- Licensed Practical/Vocational Nurse License.
- BLS Certification required.
- Intravenous Therapy and Blood Certifications preferred.
- ACLS may be required in certain care areas.
Experience
- Minimum six months’ prior experience in an acute care setting preferred.
