Position: Nurse (Nurse Manager)

Summary

The Dayton - Ohio VAMC is looking for a Nurse Manager for GI/Endoscopy in the Surgical and Procedural Care Nursing Service. The Nurse Manager demonstrates the fundamental knowledge of the unit and is responsible and accountable for all elements of the nursing process when providing or supervising direct patient care.

Qualifications
  • English Language Proficiency – must be proficient in basic written and spoken English.
  • Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate accrediting agency at the time of completion (ACEN or CCNE).
  • Or individuals attending a master’s level bridge program in nursing who have completed bachelor’s level coursework may become registered before completing the bridge program.
  • Upon achievement of a state license, the individual may be appointed on a temporary basis and later converted to a permanent appointment upon successful completion and graduation from the bridge program (VA Handbook 5005 – Appendix G6).
  • Or a graduate of foreign professional nursing school – current full active unrestricted registration meets the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing to warrant appointment as a registered nurse.
  • Or credit for foreign nursing education higher than associate degree/entry level requires formal degree equivalency validation from a recognized equivalency evaluation accepted by VA (e.g., International Consultants of Delaware).
  • Current full active unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a U.S. State, Territory or Commonwealth (e.g., Puerto Rico) or the District of Columbia.
  • Graduate Nurse Technician (GNT) exception – candidates who otherwise meet the basic education requirements but do not possess licensure may be appointed at the entry step with a 120‑day temporary appointment while actively pursuing licensure (may be extended up to two years on a case‑by‑case basis).
  • Grade determinations – Scope–Education and Dimension criteria must be met; practice, veteran/patient driven care, leadership, professional development and evidence‑based practice/ research detail each grade and level.
  • Preferred experience – previous management/supervisory experience; previous GI Endoscopy experience or procedural nursing experience.
  • Physical requirements – visual acuity, hearing, speech, manual dexterity; long periods of walking, standing, stooping, bending; patient transfers, mechanical lifts; exposure to infected patients; ability to work under stress; annual employee health requirements; driving may be required for home settings.
Duties
  • Assesses, plans, implements and evaluates delivery of care based on age‑specific components.
  • Coordinates care focused on patient education, self‑management and customer satisfaction throughout the continuum of care.
  • Collaborates with interdisciplinary team and participates in process improvement initiatives.
  • Manages one or more defined areas in Surgical and Procedural Nursing Service; key supervisory level registered nurse essential to organizational effectiveness.
  • 24/7 accountability, authority and responsibility for management and operation of a designated unit/department.
  • Ensures compassionate veteran‑centric safe patient care; implements evidence‑based nursing standards of practice; oversees unit staffing, patient care delivery and quality outcomes.
  • Collaborates with interdisciplinary team regarding clinical programs and quality improvement activities; allocates resources to promote efficient, effective, safe and compassionate nursing care based on current standards of practice.
  • Provides clinical and administrative leadership and expertise; serves as link between nursing personnel and other disciplines; influences staff to meet organizational goals, mission, vision, values and standards of the Medical Center and Nursing Services.
  • Collaborates with executive nursing staff to contribute to strategic planning, innovation, recruitment and retention of nurses; promotes shared decision‑making and keeps staff informed.
  • Other duties as assigned.
