Deputy Sheriffs are responsible for preserving peace, protecting life and property of citizens through the enforcement of the law of the State of Ohio.
- Preserves the peace, protects life and property, and enforces the laws of this state.
- Patrol assigned area and respond to criminal and civil calls as dispatched.
- Apprehend violators of the law, perform vacant house and business checks.
- Control traffic and maintain assigned vehicle and other equipment.
- Prepare accurate and complete reports applicable to the situation.
- Maintains the safety, order, and security of county court facilities and assigned county buildings, including providing courtroom security during trials.
- Escorts judges, jurors, witnesses, or court staff when necessary for their protection.
- Maintain security and control of prisoners/inmates in all county court facilities.
- Escorts or transports prisoners/inmates to assigned locations.
- Investigates criminal activity including performing full investigation of misdemeanors, felonies, and traffic offenses.
- Evaluates reported felony and misdemeanor offenses in assigned area and takes statements from suspects, victims, and witnesses.
- Contacts complainants and witnesses in follow-up investigations; interrogates suspects and make arrests when appropriate.
- Conduct surveillance of locations or persons as assigned; prepare criminal case files; develop probable cause of issuance of arrest or search warrants; and appear in court as a witness when required.
- 21 years of age
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Holds or has the ability obtain a Certification as a Peace Officer by the Ohio Peace Officers' Training Commission per Ohio Administrative Code
- Ability to meet established physical and training requirements for standing, using stairways, running, lifting light to heavy objects, and protecting self and others against physical assault
- A valid driver's license
Upon passing a written entry-level examination (if required), a background investigation including a criminal background check and a pre-employment polygraph examination will be completed. Disqualifying CriteriaAll Applicants must be able to comply with the Tattoo Policy stated below:
- All MCSO Personnel cannot display any tattoo that is sexually suggestive, vulgar, racist, contains profane language, promotes violence, is discriminatory or suggests intolerance of a particular race, religion, gender or sexual preference, national origin, associated with groups that advocate such thoughts, or is recognized as a symbol of a gang or group known or suspected of criminal activity.
- Deputy Sheriffs cannot display any tattoo on their face, neck, head, or hands. The only exceptions are:
1) A tattooed wedding ring on the traditional finger.
2) Small tattoos on the base of the neck or behind the ear that are not easily visible may be permitted with approval from the Sheriff or his designee.
