Overview
Department: Observation Unit
Shift: 7:00 pm – 7:30 am, Full-Time 36 hours per week, 72 hours per pay period
Facility: Miami Valley Hospital
A Patient Care Technician (PCT) works with nurses and doctors to care for patients. They perform tasks that support patient care and hospital operations.
Responsibilities- Check vital signs and monitor temperature, heartbeat, and breathing.
- Assist patients with mobility, dressing, and eating.
- Collect samples such as blood or urine.
- Clean and change dressings.
- Report changes in a patient’s condition to a nurse.

A PCT is supervised by a nurse to ensure safe and correct care. The PCT may also be referred to as a Patient Care Technician/Unit Clerk (PCT/HUC) and may assist with paperwork and tasks that help the hospital run smoothly to support patient care.
PCTs are essential members of the healthcare team who help patients feel better and recover.
QualificationsEducation: High school diploma or GED.
Training: Must obtain a BLS CPR certificate
. If not already held, CPR training can be provided at orientation.
Experience: Successful completion of one of the following:
- Completion of previous STNA or CNA training or Patient Care Technician/Assistant training.
- Direct patient care experience within the last five years, including vital signs and direct patient care activities (e.g., bathing, turning/positioning, toileting).
- Currently enrolled in nursing school with at least one clinical rotation completed.
Special Consideration: If the candidate has prior direct patient care experience, they may be excused from fundamental training (BCOP) upon successful skills validation, in lieu of the above requirements.
Other Skills- Ability to multitask while remaining courteous and attentive.
- Proficient with using a computer.
- Strong organizational skills.
- Good communication and listening abilities.
- Bonus: prior hospital work experience.
