position summary:

under the direction of the disease prevention program supervisor, the disease prevention specialist is responsible for providing client-centered hiv/hcv testing counseling, linkage to care and facilitates, and educational interventions among youth populations.

responsibilities include but not limited to:

  • implementation of community-based health promotion classes, including topics on sexual health in a variety of settings.
  • assisting with community engagement in region 9 (clark, darke, greene, miami, montgomery, and preble counties) through outreach, recruitment efforts and planning activities, that will build capacity and foster public relationships.
  • facilitation of pre-exposure prophylaxis (prep) and post-exposure prophylaxis (pep) education and activities.
  • conducting hiv pre-test and post-test counseling and interventions for clients and their sexual partners who may be at increased risk for hiv infections, including providing educational, behavioral, and risk reduction information.
  • performing finger sticks for rapid hiv, hepatitis c, and syphilis testing.
  • assisting with planning and development of community health-related programs including curriculum, program material, educational pamphlets, and related literature; partnering with community groups to network and promote healthy outcomes.
  • assisting with data collection and providing input to the assessment of the validity of the program, complying with program requirements, including periodic reporting.
  • providing referrals as needed for medical, social services and psychological follow-up.
  • addressingpublic requests for hiv/aids information through group presentations, tv, radio, and printed materials.
  • developing needs assessment by maintaining relationships with external agencies to identify hiv/aids education programs, sharingresources, and locatingservices for clients.
  • interacting with staff on hiv/aids related programs with emphasis on reducing the spread of hiv in montgomery county and the surrounding communities in region 9 (clark, darke, greene, miami, and preble counties).
  • performing clerical duties which include data entry for electronic medical records (emr) and completing reports.
job requirements

minimum qualifications:

  • bachelor’s degree in community health, communications, biological science, public health, social science, or another related social services field
  • one (1) - two (2) years in community health/social services community outreach, experience in education activities in health or closely related field
  • experience working with culturally and economically diverse populations, including all genders and ethnicities; gay/bisexual/transgender populations, and people living with chronic disease, substance users and persons with mental health diagnosis
  • ability to gain certification of venipuncture training by the american red cross or other qualified training facility within 12 months of hire, hiv counseling, testing and referral (ctr) within six (6) months of hire
  • understands and acknowledges that public health - dayton & montgomery county uses evidence-based and evidence-informed public health practices based on scientific research including health promotion theory and practice, environmental health measures, and communicable disease control measures including vaccination, isolation, and quarantine practices, and medicine for treatment and prevention of disease, among others
  • understands and acknowledges the use of tobacco or nicotine products in any form including replacement therapy products and prescription medications used to treat smoking addiction for anyone hired after january 1, 2014, is prohibited
  • required to play an active role during apublic health emergency, crisis, outbreak, incident, or event in which the health commissioner deems additional personnel resources are warranted. This may include changes in responsibilities and working locations/hours
  • completion of incident command system 100 and national incident management system 700 courses within 90 days of hire
  • valid state of ohio driver’s license and insurance on any personal vehicle that will be used for work
