UDRI’s Sustainment & Readiness sector and Materials and Materials Degradation division closely support the USAF in technology transition of advanced manufacturing technologies. This position is located at UDRI’s facility in Kettering, OH and will focus on supporting transition of additive manufacturing (AM) and repair technologies using non‑destructive evaluation (NDE) methods of x‑ray computed tomography (XCT), digital radiography (DR), x‑ray diffraction (XRD), electromagnetic testing (ET), immersion ultrasonic testing (UT), and fluorescent penetrant inspection (FPI).

Key tasks include applying USAF and industry standards and best practices to establish NDE acceptance and rejection criteria, inspection methods, and procedures for emerging technologies, as well as performing and reporting XCT scanning, reconstruction, and analysis.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in science, engineering, engineering technology, or equivalent, or 7 years' demonstrated experience and performance in the NDE field.
  • 3 years of multi‑industry NDE experience applying x‑ray computed tomography (XCT) or non‑film radiographic techniques, and fluorescent penetrant inspection (FPI) to evaluation of materials and components.
  • Certifiable as an American Society for Nondestructive Testing (ASNT) Level II in radiographic testing (RT).
  • Experience using Volume Graphics or similar software for CT image processing and data analysis.
  • Research experience including planning, conducting experiments, analysis, and interpretation.
  • Attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Interpersonal communication skills with coworkers and clients at all levels.
  • Due to the requirements of our research contracts with the U.S. federal government, candidates for this position must be a U.S. citizen.
  • Additional 5 years of multi‑industry NDE experience applying XCT or non‑film radiographic techniques, and fluorescent penetrant inspection (FPI).
  • Certified as an ASNT Level III in RT.
Preferred Qualifications
  • ASNT Level II certification(s) in other method(s).
  • Experience in additional NDE methods, including x‑ray diffraction (XRD), electromagnetic testing (ET), and/or ultrasonic testing (UT).
  • Experience with NDE of additively manufactured (AM) materials and components.
  • NDE experience within the aerospace industry or DoD.
  • Project management experience.
  • Demonstrated technical writing skills.
  • Working knowledge of USAF policies and procedures.
  • ASNT Level III certification(s) in UT or other method(s).
  • Experience with quality systems and NDE written practice development.
