Senior Engineer I (Department of Public Works and Department of Water)

ResponsibilitiesDesigns, writes, reviews plans and specifications and prepares cost estimates for engineering projects involving capital improvement initiatives, including roadway infrastructure and water resources utilities. Through close review, Senior Engineers ensure plans and cost estimates of consulting engineers, architects and private contractors conform to specifications and regulations, are economically favorable and are compatible with current and future City projects. Ensures construction projects in progress conform to plans, specifications and regulations through periodic monitoring;
resolves problems with existing systems discovered through inspection, research and communication with involved parties. Reviews plans, specifications and cost estimates for all plats, proposed utility construction, private construction or demolition projects and all permit work for adherence to all regulations and construction standards.
Additional responsibilities include traffic signal design, timing and system design; knowledge of computerized traffic signal systems; and the ability to perform geometric highway design and traffic planning and development.
WaterAdditional responsibilities include analyzing and recommending solutions or alternatives to problems concerning water distribution and flow requirements, sanitary sewers, storm sewers, street location, etc., through studies and personal investigation.
Minimum Qualifications- Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering AND 6 years of experience in designing and/or constructing capital improvement projects (Water Engineering).
- Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering AND 6 years of experience in traffic signal design, timing and systems design, computerized signal systems, geometric design and/or traffic planning and development (Civil Engineering).
- A Master’s Degree in an Engineering related field or in Public Administration may substitute for one year of experience.
- Up to 1 year of experience may be granted for employment with the City of Dayton as a Municipal Inspector, with a Master’s Degree substituting for 1 year of experience.
- Degree must be from a college or university accredited by the U.S. Department of Education through the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools Higher Learning Commission or an equivalent region.
Must be registered as a Professional Engineer (P.E.) in the State of Ohio or be able to obtain registration through a reciprocity agreement at time of appointment.
License RequirementsMust possess a valid driver’s license at time of appointment and maintain thereafter as a condition of continued employment.
Background CheckA background investigation and evidence of employment authorization and identity are required prior to employment. All candidates must pass any level of background investigation applicable to the position.
