PSE is seeking an experienced, detail-oriented Accountant to oversee all financial activities and ensure the smooth operation of our accounting and benefits administration functions. This role operates under the general supervision of the Legal Administrator. It requires strong independent judgment, excellent communication skills, and the ability to proactively manage financial processes in a professional services environment.
Key Responsibilities- Conduct the firm’s complete accounting function.
- Manage the billing cycle to ensure timely attorney billing.
- Monitor accounts payable and support collection efforts.
- Assist in preparing and maintaining the annual firm budget.
- Prepare monthly firm-wide and attorney-specific financial reports.
- Coordinate annual corporate tax return preparation (Federal, State & Local) with external accountants.
- Reconcile all firm checking accounts monthly.
- Oversee year-end financial closing and support external accountants in preparing annual financial statements.
- Administer firm benefit programs, including medical, dental, vision, life/AD&DD, LTD policies, and parking passes.
- Manage the firm’s Section 125 cafeteria plan, including employee education, documentation review, and payment authorization.
- Review and validate all benefits-related invoices.
- Participate in new employee orientation and maintain HR files.
- Monitor COBRA compliance and prepare required notices.
- Prepare and file Workers’ Compensation reports.
- Process bi-weekly payroll accurately and on schedule.
- Track attendance, vacation, and personal time.
- Verify overtime authorization and calculate payments.
- Process employee contributions to 401(k) and HSA accounts.
- Ensure payroll service compliance for all federal, state, local, and school district tax reporting.
- Calculate employee-specific with holdings for benefits, parking, cafeteria plans, and other deductions.
- Prepare financial documentation supporting the Shareholder Compensation Plan.
- Monitor the firm’s Trust account and prepare annual unclaimed funds reports to the State of Ohio.
- Respond timely to internal requests for financial, HR, or administrative information.
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting or equivalent practical experience.
- 3–7 years of progressively responsible accounting experience, ideally within a law firm or other professional services organization.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple deadlines.
- Exceptional attention to detail, including proofreading accuracy.
- Excellent written and verbal communication abilities.
- Demonstrated professionalism and the ability to work courteously with attorneys, staff, vendors, and external partners.
- Ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality and represent the firm in a businesslike manner.
- Willingness to work occasional extended or irregular hours as needed.
