Position: Field Research Supervisor (FIELD RSCH SUPV 2)

Job Summary

The purpose of this position is to direct the University of California Laboratory for Research in Food Preservation (UCLRFP) in San Ramon, California. Provide scientific leadership for the microbiological and processing aspects of the Laboratory's program, supervise the staff and manage the budget and contract with the State. #CA-AR

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position
  • M.S. in Food Science and Technology or Food Microbiology or Thermal Processing; or B.S. in Food Science and Technology or Food Microbiology or Thermal Processing and work experience.
  • Experience with a wide variety of food products and preservation processes including aseptic processes, conventional retort processing, acidified products, and food ingredients, and food processing regulations.
  • Experience documenting compliance with Federal, and State.
  • Experience maintaining confidentiality and ability to accurately and efficiently complete paperwork confirming compliance with policy.
  • Skills to perform effective risk assessments and crisis management, to make time-critical decisions concerning product safety and communicate decisions that may have significant safety implications to consumers and significant financial implications to the companies producing product to be recalled.
  • Interpersonal skills to provide a service-oriented atmosphere to State agency personnel as well as industry colleagues who submit products for evaluation. Written and oral communication skills to compose professional and accurate documents.
  • Organizational skills to prioritize, plan, organize, design and carry out sample analyses in an accurate and timely manner. Skills to distribute effort appropriately among the projects to meet deadlines and maintain a high level of productivity.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Education and experience equivalent to a Master's degree level in the scientific discipline of Food Science and Microbiology.
  • Advanced and in-depth scientific experience in the disciplines of multiple fields of food science and technologies including food processing, food microbiology, thermo-bacteriology, food chemistry/biochemistry and nutritional sciences.
  • Experience reviewing research and project proposals including budgets and contracts.

Department Overview

Food Science and Technology is a large department within the College of Agricultural and Environmental Technology. The department consists of 40 faculty members, 20 staff, and 600 undergraduate and graduate students. The department has a total estimated annual operating budget for teaching, research, outreach and support of approximately $65MM, composed of state, federal, and extramural funds, endowments, gifts, and sales income.

The mission of the department is to generate knowledge about foods through research, and to apply and disseminate knowledge through teaching and outreach, with the goal of ensuring the availability of safe, nutritious, appealing food, with minimum environmental impact, for the benefit of all people.

Department Specific Job Scope

Although this group is located off-campus, there is still significant interaction between the FS&T Department and the UCLRFP with regard to current food safety issues with regard to new and innovative products and thermal processing issues.
