Salary range: The salary range for this position is $185,800 to $239,100. Off-scale salaries and other components of pay are offered when necessary to meet competitive conditions, qualifications, and experience.

Position description

The Department of Surgical and Radiological Sciences at the UC Davis Weill School of Veterinary Medicine seeks candidates for a tenure-track Assistant or Associate Professor of Comparative Ophthalmology.

  • RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Clinical: This position has a 50% clinical effort assignment to the Ophthalmology Service of the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital (VMTH), including night and weekend coverage, shared with 5 other ophthalmology faculty. When on clinical service, the individual will be responsible for directing, instructing and supervising veterinary students and house officers; providing health care and service to patients; and advising and consulting with referring veterinarians and clients.

    Additionally, the individual will be responsible for the medical and surgical management of ophthalmic diseases of all species brought to or cared for by the VMTH.
  • Research and Creative Work: The development of a creative and productive basic and/or clinically oriented research program in vision science, including publication of results in professional/scientific journals, is a fundamental and indispensable requirement of the position. Development of an extramurally-funded research program is expected. Individual will provide leadership in directing research projects of DVM students, residents, postdoctoral fellows, and graduate students.
  • Teaching: Responsibilities include:
    1) participation in lecture and laboratory instruction in the DVM professional curriculum;
    2) clinical teaching in the VMTH;
    3) participation in the graduate clinical (resident) training program of the VMTH; and
    4) participation in the graduate academic programs (MS and PhD) of the campus, if applicable.
  • Professional Competence: Advance the discipline within the VMTH, as well as locally and nationally, through participation and leadership in providing high quality patient care in the hospital environment. Expected to establish a reputation for excellence locally, regionally, and nationally. Over the course of their career, must demonstrate clinical competence and be recognized for accomplishment in a focused area of ophthalmology.
  • Service: University and public service through committee work, participation in professional organizations, continuing education, and other appropriate means is required.

Must be eligible for veterinary medical licensing in the State of California and obtain a full California license prior to beginning clinical duties.

Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

  • Board certification by the American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists (ACVO) or European College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists (ECVO), or completion of an approved residency of the ACVO or ECVO by date of appointment.
  • Board certification will be required for appointment at or promotion to the Associate rank.
  • Documented record of creative scholarship or potential to develop and lead a research program in ophthalmology.
  • Documented clinical experience and demonstrated competence in clinical veterinary ophthalmology.
