Job Summary

We are looking for a Large Animal Clinic Equine Surgery Receiving Technician to work alongside our world leading faculty clinicians and technicians, helping them teach the next generation of veterinarians while also serving the animals and pet owners of our community.
Under general supervision of the Large Animal Clinic Patient Care Manager and Equine surgeons, provide technical support for the Equine Surgery (Lameness and Emergency) Receiving services and other Large Animal Clinic services. Assist in coordination of the receiving and surgery schedule for a variety of faculty, residents and interns on a daily basis. Act as a liaison between client services staff and equine surgery coordinator to help facilitate incoming and hospitalized patients.
Facilitate daily caseload with support services such as imaging, operating room and farrier to ensure the efficiency of equine surgical service operations. Receive, handle, & restrain patients (equines, llamas & alpacas). Assist in the Large Animal Operating room with Equine Surgery patients, prepare patients for anesthesia induction, position patient for surgeries, sterile prep and assist surgeons during major and minor surgeries.
Collect samples, perform diagnostic testing, administer medical treatments, monitor patients, and maintain accurate medical records. Assist clinical students with treatments of patients and instruct them on best practices for routine and emergency care.
Minimum Qualifications
- Must possess a Veterinary Assistant Controlled Substance Permit (VACSP) or obtain within 3 months of date of hire.
- No Minimum Education required.
- Experience & skill in handling, restraining, and working with horses of all types and temperaments, moving quickly with fractious, violent horses and anticipate potential problems to ensure safety and effectiveness of restraint.
- Experience with aseptic technique, medication administration, fluids commonly used in equines, performing mathematical calculations to calculate doses, bandaging & wound care, basic technical diagnostic & patient care procedures.
- Experience with equine husbandry, anatomy, behavior, and basic physiology identify abnormal physical signs and appearances.
- Oral and written communication and interpersonal skills to interact with a diverse group of people including clients, clinicians, students, and staff to ensure understanding in receiving and giving instructions.
- Skill to recognize and handle difficult/unpleasant situations and/or individuals.
Preferred Qualifications
- Current CA Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) license.
- Experience using VMACS.
- Skill to perform emergency care procedures & provide technical assistance during life threatening situations according to established protocols and to manage various treatment apparatus (fluid therapy catheters, urinary catheter, nasogastric tubes, IV infusion pumps, blood pressure monitors, recording patient behavior, bodily functions using appropriate medical terminology and placing IV catheters and nasogastric tubes).

The VMTH is a unit that provides clinical material for teaching programs throughout the School of Veterinary Medicine. Its primary objectives are to train students and graduate students, to serve as a referral center for practicing veterinarians, to collect clinical information, and to provide veterinary services to the public.
Position Information- Salary or Pay Range: $27.51/hr.
