Position: Senior Stage Technician (SCENE TCHN SR)

Job Summary

Under supervision from the Production Manager, serve as a Senior Technician at the Mondavi Center including Jackson Hall, Vanderhoef Studio Theatre and other event spaces on and off site. Responsibilities includes load in, set up, operation, and strike of lighting, video, and sound equipment; rigging and flyrail operation, event and stage set‑ups and strikes based on supplied diagrams, including but not limited to performances, banquets, conference events, and receptions.

Interact directly and professionally with local and traveling artists and clients to ensure their needs are met. Perform maintenance and repair of theatrical and event-based equipment. Maintain a positive working environment and high standards of safety, craftsmanship, and efficiency. Lead and oversee stage set‑ups, flyrail work, hanging of light plots, soft goods, and portable projection screens, audio and video set up and rigging for live performances, and other events.

Coordinate lighting, carpentry, rigging, stage decks and counter‑weight system maintenance with Principal Technicians and assigned stage crews. Train, organize and evaluate professional and student stagehands, both professional and developing. Carry out touring production managers’ and technical directors’ directions while safeguarding Mondavi Center policies, procedures, and equipment. Serve as a Stage Manager overseeing performance crews as assigned.

This position is 0.75

FTE over a period of 9 months, with 3 months of unpaid furlough.

Qualifications
  • No Minimum Education required.
  • Experience in technical theatre or stage production including knowledge of technical theatre protocol, chain‑of‑command, and stage equipment and practices.
  • Experience acting as one or more of the following: lead carpenter, flyman, rigger, lead electrician, light board operator, audio engineer, video technician, or stage or event manager for live performances and events (both rehearsed and unrehearsed) in a roadhouse situation.
  • Experience working with a staff with a wide variety of experience levels to motivate stage crew members and encourage participation, teamwork, and model and promote a respectful, professionally appropriate working environment which adheres to health and safety guidelines.
  • Experience working with a wide variety of users, including regional, national, or internationally‑known artists to community renters; and working cooperatively and productively while enforcing facility policies and procedures.
  • Skills to pursue and achieve Fall Protection Competent Person training through a course that meets ANSI Z359 requirements.
  • Interpersonal and communication skills to effectively and professionally communicate both orally and in writing; elicit information needed to clarify inquiries and requests; resolve sensitive or difficult situations diplomatically; and to work effectively and cooperatively with constituents from diverse cultural backgrounds, perspectives, and levels of theatre production experience.
  • Organizational skills to manage the multiple details and tasks associated with executing productions; and to assume general assignments and follow through to successful completion with a minimum of direction, including recognizing new tasks and projects that become necessary.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in a University campus based performing arts venue.
  • Experience operating power tools, hand tools, and pneumatic equipment within safety guidelines.
  • Experience working with and leading a crew with a variety of experience levels, including union members, road crews, part‑time staff, and student stage crew members in the completion of their daily tasks.
  • Knowledge of current state and federal OSHA standards applicable to professional theatre environments.
