Position OverviewThe Department of Viticulture and Enology, an internationally recognized center of excellence for viticulture research, teaching, and extension, invites applications for an Assistant‑Professor in Cooperative Extension (CE) in Enology. The successful candidate will conduct original applied research that addresses winemaking problems, sustainability of production practices, microbiological stability, and the development of high‑quality no‑ or low‑alcohol wines. The role also involves building an extension education and outreach program for growers, vintners, consumers, government partners and under‑represented groups, and working closely with campus and county‑based CE academics, industry partners, and regulatory agencies.
Key responsibilities include conducting applied research, publishing results, mentoring graduate students, and providing leadership and technical support to CE academics and clientele. The faculty member will serve in UC ANR Program Teams, work groups, and regional committees, and will maintain liaison with federal and state agencies relevant to enology.
Responsibilities- Detection, prevention, and remediation of winemaking problems.
- Improving the sustainability of production practices.
- Understanding and controlling composition and sensory properties of musts and wines in relation to viticultural variables or winery practices.
- Practices assuring microbial stability of wine and identifying causes of microbial spoilage.
- Production of high‑quality no‑or low‑alcohol wines and spirits.
Experienced in original applied research in enology and a strong record of successful research publications and collaborations. Demonstrated capacity to partner with industry, government, and community stakeholders. Success in securing external funding and mentorship of graduate students is strongly preferred.
Compensation/SalaryThe salary range for this position is $110,600 – $138,500. Off‑scale salaries may be offered when necessary to meet competitive conditions, qualifications, and experience.
