Position: Defensive Coordinator / Assistant Head Coach

Position Overview

The purpose of this position is the coaching and development of young men both on and off the field. This position will be responsible for coordination of the defense coaching a defensive position. There may be some special teams duties as assigned. Davidson is a Division I-FCS program that competes in the Pioneer football league. We are looking for a dedicated individual with a passion for coaching and developing young men.

We are looking for an individual that can work in a competitive and fast-paced environment and work with the rest of the staff to achieve our goal of winning the Pioneer League Championship.

Specific Duties
  • Assist on field and in classroom instruction of assigned area (i.e. football) coaching techniques and strategies; evaluate individual performances and provide leadership and instruction in areas of deficiencies as required; serve as a defensive assistant coach.
  • Supervise the development and implementation of defensive philosophy, including game and practice plans; assist in defensive staff work including scouting and game day operations; assist in the creation of the defensive playbook and installation system.
  • Participate in comprehensive recruiting activities; coordinate efforts with Admissions Office to establish academic viability for prospects; thoroughly evaluate and recruit all viable prospects in designated geographical area. Ensure compliance by coaching staff, players, and recruits with NCAA, Pioneer Football League, and Davidson College athletics regulations, policies, and overall mission of amateurism.

The Defensive Coordinator is responsible for designing, implementing, and managing the defensive game plan for the football team. Collaborate closely with the head coach and other coaching staff to develop strategies that maximize the team's defensive performance. The coordinator calls the defensive plays during games, analyzes opponents' offensive tendencies, and ensures that the defensive players understand their roles and execute the plan effectively.

They also track player performance, adjust tactics as needed, and work to ensure consistent improvement throughout the season. The offensive coordinator plays a key role in shaping the team's offensive identity and driving overall success.

Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree
  • At least one year coaching experience in a collegiate football environment
  • The job requires a highly motivated individual dedicated to inspiring and leading young student-athletes; an intricate working knowledge of the sport of football. Each position may have a specific area of coaching, such as defensive backs, tight ends, running backs, and/or defensive ends.
