Purpose of Job

The Driver shall provide driving and vehicle routine maintenance services, as well as assist in handling logistical activities carried out by the Mission, with particular emphasis on transferring mail, packages and all sorts of items as required by the office. The Driver will also assist protocol related functions.

Main Functions
  • Provide non‑clerical support
  • Follow up and implement operational work schedules and support activities.
  • Ensure compliance to operational standards.
  • Assist in liaising effectively with internal and external stakeholders.
Specific Responsibilities
  • Serve as a driver/messenger to the Permanent Mission;
  • Drive office vehicles for the transport of authorized personnel and delivery and collection of mail, documents and other items;
  • Facilitate the periodic vehicle technical check‑up process in accordance with traffic laws and regulations of the United States of America.
  • Keep the assigned vehicle(s) in very clean condition at all times and carry out daily routine maintenance checks on the vehicle(s) to establish roadworthiness and make recommendations concerning repair and service. Such checks should focus but not be limited to – oil, water, battery, lights, brakes, tyres, communication system, etc.;
  • Maintain the vehicle logs in accordance with established administrative procedures of the AU Commission in general.
  • Perform any other related duties as may be assigned or required.
Academic Requirements And Relevant Experience
  • Technical or Vocational Training Certificate or equivalent, with Valid Driver’s license and very good knowledge of the local driving rules, regulations and courtesies.
  • Minimum 3 (three) years work experience as a Driver in international and/or Diplomatic working environment and understanding of the protocols involved is required. Candidates with higher number of years as work experience in such working environments will be considered as an advantage.

  • Safe driving record;
  • Knowledge of driving rules and regulations and skills in minor vehicle repair;
  • Willing and ready to be available to provide transport services as required by the officials and the office in general at all times;
  • Very good sense of and appreciation of protocol and level of consistent cleanliness of both self and vehicle at all times;
  • Very good ability to manage priorities of the office; manage time effectively; very good sense of urgency;
  • High good sense of professionalism, responsibility, punctuality, confidentiality, effectiveness and efficiency;
  • Very good ability to communicate both orally and in writing, in English;
  • Demonstrates a client‑oriented approach;
  • Demonstrates high level of courtesy, ability and readiness to listen and respond adequately and professionally;
  • Tact and the ability to work with a diversity of people and clients;
  • Good ability in spoken and written English is required. Knowledge of any other working languages of the African Union is an added advantage.

Tenure of Appointment

The appointment will be made on a regular term contract for a period of three (3) years, of which the first twelve months shall be considered as a probationary period. Thereafter, the contract will be for a period of two years renewable, subject to satisfactory performance and deliverables.

Languages

Remuneration

Indicative basic salary of US $ 6,935.00 per annum GSB7 (Step
1) locally recruited staff of the Commission.
