The Lactation Consultant RN provides specialized, evidence-based care to support breastfeeding and lactation for mothers and infants. This role assesses feeding needs, develops individualized lactation care plans, and assists with complex breastfeeding challenges. The RN educates and empowers families, serves as a resource for staff, and promotes best practices aligned with Baby-Friendly and clinical standards. While primarily focused on lactation, the RN collaborates with the Women & Children care team to ensure safe, culturally competent, and family-centered care.
May be required to assume general Women & Children RN responsibilities, including care for mothers, newborns, or pediatric patients, when unit needs arise. Adheres to Mercy One’s performance expectations and upholds the Mission, Vision, and Values of Mercy One.
- Conducts an initial assessment to gather data.
- Identifies patient problems and develops them into an outcome/goal-based plan of care.
- Implements the lactation-focused plan of care.
- Evaluates patient progress and revises the plan as needed.
- Communicates relevant clinical information to optimize outcomes.
- Demonstrates clinical competence.
- Manages fetal and neonatal monitoring when applicable.
- Provides age-appropriate care based on principles of growth and development.
- Adheres to safety and infection control standards.
- Maintains compliance with laws, regulations, and organizational standards.
- Associate degree in nursing required.
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred.
- Current Iowa RN license, (current Illinois (IL) license if working in IL) required.
- American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) required.
- Certified Lactation Counselor (CLC) certification through Academy of Lactation Policy and Practice (ALPP) required.
- International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) credential required within three (3) years of hire.
- Proof of completion of Mandatory Reporter – Child and/or Dependent Adult Abuse training within three (3) months of hire.
- High language, intermediate to high math, high critical thinking ability.
- Basic computer skills required.
