The Sterile Processing Technician is responsible for the decontamination, cleaning, sterilization, and preparation of surgical instruments and equipment. This role ensures all instrumentation is processed according to industry standards, manufacturer s instructions for use (IFUs), and hospital protocols to support safe and efficient clinical operations.
Key Responsibilities- Decontamination & Sterilization:
Operate sterilization equipment safely and efficiently. - Decontaminate soiled instruments, equipment, and sterilization containers per IFUs and regulatory guidelines.
- Inspect instruments for cleanliness, functionality, and integrity.
- Instrument Assembly & Case Support:
Assemble and correct instrument sets according to Count sheets, instrument tracking systems, and current standards of practice. - Maintain required inventory levels for surgical trays and case carts.
- Ensure accurate labeling, wrapping, and sterilization of instruments.
- Perform regular QA audits of peer work.
- Report equipment malfunction or instrument damage immediately.
- Uphold compliance with hospital, manufacturer, and accreditation bodies.
- Maintain a clean, safe, and organized sterile processing environment.
- Support surgical services by ensuring timely instrument availability.
- Collaborate effectively with OR and SPD leadership.
Skills & Qualifications
- Minimum 5 years Sterile Processing experience
- Certified Sterile Processing Technician (CRCST, CSPDT, or equivalent)
- Experience operating sterilizers (steam, hydrogen peroxide, etc.)
- Experience decontaminating and assembling instrument sets
- Familiarity with tracking systems and instrument count sheets
- Experience working as a Traveler Sterile Processing Technician
- Ability to follow detailed IFUs and regulatory standards
- Experience with Cerner
- Hospital-based SPD experience
- Strong QA and peer audit experience
