Duties

  • Inspection of ships for regulatory compliance, seaworthiness, and protection of the marine environment, and issue inspection certificates.
  • Investigates a wide variety of accidents, pollution incidents, and alleged infractions of the Canada Shipping Act and Canada Labour Code.
  • Acts as project manager on multi-faceted audits/inspections of vessels covering nautical, marine engineering, and naval architecture.
  • Conducts examinations and issue certifications for seafarers in accordance with the Marine Personnel Regulations.
  • Audits ship safety systems, ship navigation, cargo handling and stowage procedures.

We expect to extract the first pool of applications near the end of February 2026. A pool of partially and/or fully qualified candidates will be established to staff identical or similar positions for various tenures.

Possession of a valid Canadian Certificate of Competency as a Second-class Engineer (Motor Ship or Steamship) or higher may be required. Candidates will be asked to provide proof of education and/or Canadian certificate of competency. Foreign education credentials must be assessed for Canadian equivalency. References to certification levels and experience follow the Marine Personnel Regulations of the Canada Shipping Act, 2001.

If applicable, provide information on obtaining a Canadian certificate of competency for foreign credentials.

EX1:
Five years of experience in marine design, construction, repair, operation, inspection, quality assurance or related areas or in technical or operational management of ships, or experience as master or chief mate or second/third-class engineer on ships of 150 gross tonnage or more.
