Senior Civil Materials Engineer – Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada

Join WSP, a leading engineering professional services firm, as a Senior Civil Materials Engineer. This full‑time role is located in Halifax and involves supervising field and laboratory staff, overseeing material quality‑control testing, and ensuring compliance with safety, quality, and environmental programs.

Responsibilities
  • Supervise field and laboratory staff on project sites.
  • Act as the primary representative for client communication and project performance review.
  • Oversee materials quality‑control testing services in both field and laboratory.
  • Ensure all work complies with WSP’s and the Project’s safety, quality, and environmental policies.
  • Prepare proposals, engineering, and project‑management activities for construction projects including earthworks, granulars, Portland cement concrete, and hot‑mix asphalt.
  • Perform construction material engineering review and mix design.
  • Conduct geotechnical investigations, review, and reporting.
  • Review and submit testing results for soils, concrete, and asphalt.
  • Maintain and calibrate testing equipment.
  • Communicate effectively within laboratory/field team environments.
  • Adhere to all Site Safety Absolute principles and WSP health‑safety programs.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering (P.Eng preferred).
  • 10+ years of experience in construction, materials, geotechnical, or civil engineering.
  • Proficient computer skills (Microsoft Office Suite).
  • Knowledge of construction specifications, testing standards, materials testing delivery.
  • Valid driver’s license, acceptable driving record, and ability to pass required drug/alcohol and fitness screening.
  • Proficient in English (verbal and written).
  • Physical capability to stand, sit, walk, lift, and move up to 50 lbs; ability to stoop, kneel, and crouch.
  • Strong organizational and time‑management skills.
  • Attention to detail and ability to recognize discrepancies.
  • Strong work ethic, leadership, and decision‑making skills in fast‑paced environments.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Demonstrated commitment to safety and quality.
  • Ability to attain and maintain applicable testing certification (e.g., CCIL).
