Engineering Supervisor
(Food/FMCG) – £50,000+
This is a role for engineers who still want to be on the tools but also want to make more of an impact and have more say in how things are done.
We're working with a manufacturing site that's looking for an Engineering Supervisor who can lead a team, keep standards high, and still roll their sleeves up when things go wrong. The normal day‑to‑day will be roughly 60‑70% hands‑on the tools and leading from the front – it's not a role where you'll end up being stuck behind a desk wondering what's happening on the shop floor.
The Role:You'll be responsible for the day‑to‑day performance of the engineering maintenance function, ensuring assets are looked after properly, breakdowns are dealt with quickly, and preventative maintenance actually prevents things.
You will lead a team of technicians, set priorities, and work closely with production to keep downtime to a minimum.
Responsibilities:- Leading and supporting the engineering maintenance team on shift
- Managing and prioritising breakdowns to minimise production disruption
- Planning and scheduling repairs and PPMs across the site
- Getting hands‑on with fault‑finding and breakdowns when required
- Ensuring all work is carried out safely and in line with compliance requirements
- Keeping maintenance records accurate, up to date and audit‑ready
- Working closely with production and shift managers to improve reliability
- Supporting training and development within the engineering team
- Setting expectations around standards, behaviour and ways of working
- Attending daily meetings to communicate maintenance priorities
- Managing spares and engineering stock levels
- Supporting fault‑finding on PLC‑controlled equipment
- Proven experience supervising or leading engineers in a manufacturing environment
- Strong fault‑finding skills and solid engineering fundamentals
- A good understanding of health & safety and compliance
- Confidence managing people, priorities and pressure
- Experience with inverters, cable selection and small engineering projects
- A proactive, calm approach when things don't go to plan
- CMMS experience (or willingness to learn)
- Experience in FMCG or the food manufacturing industry is useful – not a deal breaker if you lack direct experience, but it will mean a steeper learning curve
This isn't a step away from engineering – it's a chance to influence how maintenance is done while staying technically sharp. You'll have visibility, responsibility, and the chance to genuinely improve performance rather than just react to problems.
If you enjoy leading people, fixing problems properly, and being trusted to run your area then this one's worth a conversation.
