Phlebotomist

• Arranges daily activities based on urgency of sample requests.
• Identifies consumers and their personal information using two identifiers.
• Determines suitable venipuncture method based on age, health, etc.
• Provides reassurance to consumers and helps them relax.
• Identifies veins suitable for puncture.
• Obtains blood using sterile technique with sterilized needles, vials, and other equipment.
• Ensures optimal quality and quantity of samples.
• Labels samples correctly and sends/delivers them for testing.
• Adheres to all relevant health and safety standards while working.
• Performs clerical duties such as making copies, faxing documents as needed.
• Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor (e.g., telehealth, staff relief).
• Recognizes crisis situations and deescalates or resolves them.
• Greets all consumers professionally and welcomingly.
• Communicates effectively with all team members.

• Current Phlebotomy certification to practice in Alabama.
• Knowledge of adult and child phlebotomy specialties; to be attained within six (6) months of employment.
• Train the Trainer certification preferred or documented experience in providing educational topics.
• Knowledge of cultural diversity.
• Knowledge of standard office equipment, including computers and programs (PowerPoint, Excel, etc.).
• Knowledge of AHS policy and procedures as they apply to presentations.
• Knowledge of regulatory standards of the organization’s monitoring agencies (JC, DMH, DHR, Medicaid, CMS).
• Proven experience as a phlebotomist or Phlebotomy Technician.
• Experience with effective puncture techniques.
• Understanding of proper patient identification methods.
• Knowledge of legal requirements regarding drawing blood, handling fluid samples, and use of relevant medical equipment and material.
• Excellent communication skills.
• Attention to detail.
• Ability to connect with various types of consumers and make them feel comfortable.
