Position: Patrol Officer (Certified or Non-Certified)

Police Officer

The purpose of this classification is to provide police protection to the citizens of Daphne, to enforce all laws established by the Criminal Code of Alabama, and to enforce City ordinances. This position is required to work 12-hour shifts, weekends, and holidays, and will be required to work night shifts with a possibility of overtime. The hourly rate for this position begins at $24.05/hour, with opportunities for additional pay based on higher education, law enforcement, and APOST certification as outlined below.

  • Background Investigation - The background check will include a search of criminal history, driving record, and employment history. Candidates must have no felony convictions and be of good moral character and reputation.
  • Polygraph Examination
  • Conditional Job Offer - Upon successful completion of the previous steps, a conditional offer may be extended. Conditions of the job offer include a successful background and motor vehicle record check, successful completion of a pre-employment drug screen and physical assessment, and a psychological evaluation. Completion of these conditions follows the job offer.

  • Interview - Interviews are held at Daphne Police Department
  • Education Review/Assessment - Candidates who hold an Associates degree or higher will not be required to complete this step. Candidates who do not hold and Associates degree or higher must complete a basic skills assessment.
  • Physical Fitness Test - The physical fitness test determines a candidate's ability to meet the A.P.O.S.T. physical requirements of the position. Candidates must present a valid driver's license at this test. All candidates selected to participate must pass an A.P.O.S.T. Standard Physical Fitness Ability Test: 22 pushups in one (1) minute, 25 sit-ups in one (1) minute, and 1.5 mile run in 15.28.

Enforces all applicable codes, ordinances, laws and regulations (including traffic, criminal and civil) to protect life and property, prevent crime, and promote security.

Patrols assigned areas via motor vehicle or on foot to detect and deter criminal activity and traffic violations; inspects doors, windows, and premises of residential/commercial buildings/properties to ensure security or to detect suspicious conditions; responds to active alarms at residences, businesses, and industries; takes complaints and prepares detailed reports; maintains high visibility in the community.

Enforces vehicle operating laws, parking laws, and DUI laws; uses visual observation and radar/laser speed detection units to enforce speed laws; stops and interviews traffic law violators; issues parking tickets, warnings, or citations; searches vehicles when necessary; conducts field sobriety tests; assists stranded motorists or motorists in need of directions.

Responds to traffic accidents/complaints; investigates collisions/accidents involving fatalities, personal injuries, and hit-and-run drivers; measures accident scenes and makes drawings of accidents; reviews evidence, reconstructs accidents, and makes recommendations; investigates traffic hazards; coordinates removal of debris or other hazards from roadways.

Investigates bomb threats; defuses civil disturbances; investigates deaths, including deaths from natural causes, suicides, homicide, and vehicle accidents; conducts preliminary investigation of misdemeanor and felony offenses; investigates suspicious persons/vehicles.

Investigates and secures crime scene for detectives; assists in collecting evidence; assists District Attorney when needed; maintains knowledge of crimes committed; testifies in court; provides court security.

Assists the Fire Department and other law enforcement agencies; assists ambulance personnel.

Reports and investigates any and all suspicious situations; watches traffic flow; reports broken traffic…
