Trainer, Technical Writer
Position Overview
The Trainer will support the City's technology implementation and modernization efforts by developing and delivering effective training programs for end users, staff, and stakeholders. This role is responsible for ensuring successful user adoption of new systems, tools, and business processes across City departments.
The ideal candidate will have experience training diverse audiences in a public‑sector or municipal environment and will be skilled in translating complex system functionality into clear, user‑friendly instruction. Training may support enterprise systems such as financial management platforms, permitting and licensing systems, HR applications, public safety tools, and citizen service technologies.
Training Development & Delivery- Design and deliver instructor‑led and virtual training sessions for City staff and stakeholders.
- Develop training plans aligned with project schedules, system deployments, and organizational needs.
- Customize training content to meet the needs of different departments and user groups.
- Create and maintain user guides, training manuals, job aids, quick reference sheets, and instructional presentations.
- Support the development of standard operating procedures (SOPs) and end‑user documentation.
- Ensure training materials are clear, accurate, and accessible for non‑technical audiences.
- Support change management efforts by helping users understand new workflows and system enhancements.
- Provide ongoing support during system rollouts, upgrades, and process transitions.
- Gather user feedback to improve training effectiveness and identify areas requiring additional support.
- Work closely with project managers, business analysts, IT teams, and department leadership to align training with operational requirements.
- Coordinate training schedules, logistics, and participation across multiple City departments.
- Serve as a point of contact for training‑related questions and user support needs.
- Assess training outcomes through participation metrics, evaluations, and performance feedback.
- Identify gaps in user knowledge and recommend additional training or support strategies.
- Continuously update training content as systems and processes evolve.
- Strong presentation and facilitation skills for diverse audiences.
- Ability to simplify complex concepts into clear, practical instruction.
- Excellent written communication skills for documentation and training development.
- Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple training initiatives simultaneously.
- Collaborative mindset and ability to work effectively with cross‑functional teams.
- Bachelor's degree in Education, Communications, Information Systems, Public Administration, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
- 5+ years of experience delivering training or instructional support, preferably in a government or public‑sector environment around IT Projects.
- Experience supporting enterprise software implementations or IT modernization initiatives.
- Familiarity with systems commonly used by municipalities, such as ERP, HR platforms, permitting systems, or citizen‑facing applications.
- This position is hybrid, with work performed both remotely and at the City of Danville, Virginia office.
