Position: Geisinger Health System Chair of Musculoskeletal Institute

Overview

Geisinger is seeking an experienced and visionary physician executive to lead the Geisinger Musculoskeletal (MSK) Institute who will ensure the continued advancement, integration, and excellence of its clinical, educational, and research missions. The Chair will be a collaborative, service-oriented leader who values Geisinger’s employed physician model and academic infrastructure. They must also be adept at balancing the needs of a high-performing tertiary care system with those of community hospitals focused on exceptional patient care.

The Chair’s responsibilities include providing strategic direction and operational oversight for the MSK Institute across orthopaedics, sports medicine, and related specialties. This system-wide role focuses on accelerating clinical innovation, expanding access to musculoskeletal care, and fostering interdisciplinary collaboration. The Chair will be expected to drive excellence in quality, patient experience, and financial stewardship while cultivating a culture of continuous improvement and academic engagement.

The ideal candidate will possess outstanding clinical credentials, a record of leadership in musculoskeletal surgery, and demonstrated success in mentoring faculty, trainees, and staff. They will be an active clinician and educator, committed to advancing Geisinger’s mission through innovation, scholarship, and team-based care.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide overall physician leadership for the Musculoskeletal Institute and represent constituent physicians to executive leadership through serving on the Physician Leadership Council.
  • Communicate clearly with institute leadership (both physician and staff), medical staff leadership, and community physicians to define roles, responsibilities, and expectations and, where appropriate, conduct annual reviews.
  • Ensure exceptional clinical care across the system that is reflected in measures of quality, clinical outcomes, peer review, and patient satisfaction.
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive strategy for generating and managing clinical, educational, and clinical/population research growth across the Institute.
  • Work collaboratively with leaders of various entities in the advancement of medical education at Geisinger Medical Center and the Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine.
  • Cultivate an environment that enhances faculty growth and development.
  • Support collaboration across departments, hospitals, and other institutes for overall quality improvement opportunities, program development and growth.
  • Assume a level of clinical responsibilities consistent with appointment in the respective clinical department.
  • In cooperation with nursing, administration, and medical staff, develop and implement patient care policies, procedures, guidelines, and protocols and periodically update them as needed.
  • Oversee the clinical productivity of physicians and support staff; understand and manage the Institute using well-defined and understood metrics.
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with referring physicians, hospitals, and other facilities.
Ideal Experience

Clinical Excellence and Eminence

Exceptional reputation for clinical care and outstanding patient outcomes in a musculoskeletal specialty; leadership in and contribution to one or more national or international societies is expected.

Healthcare Administrative Leadership

Accomplished administrative leadership experience in an integrated delivery system, large health center/system or academic institution, e.g., department chair, vice-chair, division chief, or other significant institution-wide roles. This includes successful experience recruiting and developing clinician colleagues.

Clinical Service Line Business Management

Knowledge of the financial complexities, payer models, and associated reimbursement policies associated with the provision of high quality, cost-effective specialty healthcare and success managing all aspects of a high volume, geographically dispersed clinical service line. Experience with payer models and health plans, especially as they relate to an integrated delivery network, is additive.
