Qualifications:

  • Possess a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university;
  • Certified eligible for hire by the Administrative Office of Illinois Courts;
  • Have no prior felony convictions or suspended imposition of a sentence;
  • A residence of St. Clair County, Illinois prior to completion of probationary period;
  • Be a United States citizen and resident of Illinois within 90 days of appointment;
  • Must be 21 years of age or older;
  • Possess strong time management and organizational skills;
  • Possess strong verbal and written communication skills;
  • Possess a valid driver’s license.

Job Description

Corrections Officer

The Corrections Officer is appointed by the Director of Court Services and Probation with the approval of the Chief Circuit Judge and has a Shift Supervisor or Acting Shift Supervisor as immediate supervisor. The appointee will serve a six-month probationary period at the discretion of the Director.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Be available to assume and discharge the traditional duties or responsibilities of a detention officer as determined by management.
  • Provide supervision, guidance, care, and secure custody for youth held in detention.
  • Strive to attain constructive relationships with all detainees by developing trust and mutual respect, and by learning the interests, abilities, and problems of the youth.
  • Maintain direct involvement with youth by being present on the detention floor.
  • Encourage appropriate behavior of detainees through positive verbal communication.
  • Intervene in the event of an infraction of established rules and regulations.
  • In crisis situations, respond accordingly using the least physical force necessary and re-establish direct contact with the youth upon stabilization of the situation.
  • Maintain security by having constant visual contact and conducting random room searches.
  • Maintain safe and secure transport of juveniles as directed.
  • Maintain a safe environment for residents and staff.
  • Attend and participate in youth staffing, staff meetings, and/or training programs as assigned by the Superintendent.
  • Support fellow employees in the course of their duties.
  • Maintain the ability to work without supervision, while also taking direction and utilizing a team approach with residents, detention officers, and other personnel.
