Overview
The City of Danbury is announcing an Open Competitive Exam for the position of Equipment Mechanic.
General Statement of DutiesThis is a skilled mechanical work of a journeyman level in the maintenance and repair of automotive, construction, stand-by power and related equipment. Employees in this classification perform skilled work in the repairs of small equipment, cars, SUVs, trucks, tractors, backhoes, generators, and a wide variety of other maintenance and construction equipment. Work includes propane, gasoline and diesel fueled equipment. Employees work under the general supervision of the Chief of Water Distribution and Sewer Collection using independent judgement concerning the method of repair after receiving oral and/or written assignments.
Supervision is occasionally exercised over helpers and equipment operators during the course of repairs. Work is reviewed by a superior either during work or upon completion.
- Repairs and overhauls small equipment, cars, trucks, tractors, and medium to large construction equipment.
- Tear down and rebuilds gasoline and diesel motors
- Test, diagnose and repair equipment using scan tools, and manufacture specific computer-based software.
- Diagnose and repair fuel, electrical, brake and hydraulic systems.
- Diagnose and repair transmission, differential and PTO components.
- Dismounts, mounts and balances wheels and tires.
- Capable of welding using MIG and Tig methods.
- Perform minor body repairs including painting.
- Performs emergency road service on equipment outside of garage.
- Will work on equipment from various departments as directed.
- Keeps records and order parts as needed.
- Performs related work as required.
Considerable knowledge of methods, materials, tools and standard practices of the automotive and truck mechanics trade. Considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade. Knowledge of principles of operation of gasoline and diesel-fueled internal combustion engines. Knowledge of automotive electrical systems, brake systems, fuel systems and all other related components.
Ability to understand and carryout written and oral instructions, and to follow automotive diagrams. Skill in the use of tools, machines and testing instruments of the trade. Sufficient physical stamina to work long hours, occasionally under emergency and adverse weather conditions. Working beyond normal shift hours may be required during emergencies and/or weather events.
Experience and TrainingFour (4) years High School or Technical School or equivalent training desired. Three to five years’ experience as a mechanic. ASE Certifications A1-A8 preferred but not required. Possession of a CDL preferred but not required.
