Job Description

This is a dual role requiring flexibility and knowledge of Radiology and Medical Assisting. Accountable to the Practice Manager with a dotted line clinical supervisory link to the Diagnostic Radiology Lead Technologist, Assistant Manager of Radiology, and Manager. Operates general, fluoroscopic and portable radiographic equipment to perform a variety of pediatric radiology examinations/procedures. Apply prescribed ionizing radiation under the supervision of a Physician.

In addition, the employee performs Medical Assistant responsibilities including administrative, clinical, departmental support, and documentation duties to promote health, safety and comfort of CT Children’s patients and families. Due to infrequent radiology volume, the expectation is 20% radiology / 80% medical assisting, with potential future growth of the radiology portion.

Responsibilities

RADIOLOGY TECHNICIAN:

  • Assesses imaging orders for completeness, accuracy, and appropriateness.
  • Involves patient, parent, and caregiver in care and exam/procedure, demonstrating age‑related competency and cultural sensitivity.
  • Introduces self and role, explains procedure thoroughly to patient and/or parent before performing the procedure.
  • Performs radiologic exams/procedures, allows time for and encourages questions, and provides support and effective communication to other department members and the healthcare team.
  • Works efficiently as a team member, consults with physicians, RNs, and other technologists to provide quality imaging services.
  • Adheres to a culture of safety, washes hands, and sanitizes equipment as directed.
  • Assures timeliness and accuracy when performing requested exams, performs per protocol, and notifies appropriate ordering provider of recommended changes.
  • Provides support to other modalities within the department as required.
  • Performs diagnostic exams for all areas supported by the department of Radiology including the ED, OR, onsite and off‑site radiology locations.
  • Ensures all images are of excellent diagnostic quality, with appropriate patient demographics, positioning, technique, and laterality markers, and minimizes radiation dose in accordance with ALARA principals.
  • Educates and mentors radiology skills of new technologists and students, evaluating clinical and technical proficiency.
  • Utilizes information technology systems associated with the role, ensuring images and documentation are complete and accurate in the patient medical record.
  • Adheres to all hospital and department policies, procedures, guidelines, and protocols.
  • Coordinates equipment service as required.
  • MAY be called upon to cover nights, evenings, weekdays, weekends, and holidays; rotates shifts and scheduled on‑call responsibilities.
  • Demonstrates support for the mission, values, and goals of the organization through behaviors consistent with organizational standards and exemplary customer service.
  • Practices within the scope of the state of CT Radiologic license and ARRT (R) certification.

MEDICAL ASSISTANT:

  • Supports the patient check‑in and check‑out processes.
  • Schedules and coordinates all patient appointments.
  • Answers and directs calls.
  • Processes pre‑authorizations and pre‑certifications.
  • Prepares and files medical records.
  • Provides cross‑coverage for other administrative roles.
  • Maintains clinical files according to organization/department protocol.
  • Processes patient related correspondence.
  • Maintains confidentiality of patient information.
  • Ensures efficient patient flow, prepares treatment rooms and equipment for patient examinations, and provides procedural support following department specific guidelines.
  • Performs initial intake of patient, including interview for chief complaint/reason for visit, vital signs, and allergy information, and accurately records and updates relevant patient information.
  • Performs daily Quality Controls (QC) for all Point‑of‑Care (POC) testing, obtains specimens, accurately performs and records patient POC testing per policy.
  • Under provider and/or RN direction, tracks and retrieves patient lab/diagnostic testing results to facilitate timely provider review and follow‑up.
