Overview
The City of Dana Point's Recreation Division is seeking enthusiastic and responsible individuals to join our team as a Seasonal Recreation Leader I. Responsibilities include completing room set-ups, take-downs, and general cleaning for classes, activities, meetings, and events.
This is an entry-level opportunity for someone who enjoys working with people and being part of a dynamic recreation team.

DefinitionUnder general supervision, assist in the coordination and implementation of recreation and community service programs and special events including monitoring and leading activities at the Community Center; prepare facility areas for recreation programming and facility rentals; perform necessary maintenance to facilities; and perform other related duties as assigned.
Class CharacteristicsThis is the entry-level class in the Recreation Leader series and is typically a seasonal part-time position in the Recreation Division which may require working weekends, holidays and/or evenings. The Recreation Leader I will perform more routine tasks and duties than those assigned to higher positions in the series. Incumbents in this class may have limited or no direct recreation related work experience.
Incumbents in this position have the ability to complete diverse tasks requiring applying established practices and procedures and utilizing creativity and enthusiasm.
This position is non-exempt under FLSA standards.
Essential Job Functions- Philosophy, principles, practices, and techniques of recreation programming including in the areas of sports, arts & crafts, performing arts, special events, building maintenance, or facility operation.
- First Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and AED methods.
- Methods and techniques of effective customer service.
- Appropriate safety precautions and procedures.
- Work independently while supervising facilities and user groups.
- Interpret and follow City, departmental, and division policies, laws, and rules.
- Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Work a varied schedule of hours, which may include early mornings, evenings, weekends and holidays, at a variety of City facilities, parks, and off-site locations.
- Analyze situations carefully and adopt effective courses of action.
- Lead participants in structured activities and motivate their participation in programs.
- Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
- Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
- Graduation from high school or completion of a GED preferred. Experience in community services and/or recreational activities or general customer service experience is desirable.
- Possession of a valid American Red Cross First Aid certificate.
- Possession of a current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certificate.
- Possession of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) certificate.
Physical Requirements: Position may require the ability to perform occasional light lifting and carrying; sitting for prolonged periods of time; occasional walking, standing and/or bending. Continuous hand use and finger dexterity is needed to use the computer keyboard and operate standard office equipment; it may require occasional pushing and pulling. This position also requires the ability to have near vision for reading correspondence, reports, agendas and other records.
Good hearing is required when communicating on the telephone or in person.
