Description
PURPOSE OF CLASSIFICATION
The purpose of this classification is to operate a variety of heavy road maintenance and construction equipment with specialized functions to maintain County roads and perform Public Works projects.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.
- Operates a variety of heavy equipment to facilitate department work processes safely and efficiently.
- May serve as an assistant crew leader, assigning and directing work, training in job skills, and evaluating work.
- Follows safety procedures, utilizes safety equipment, and monitors work environment to ensure the safety of employees and other individuals.
- Inspects equipment prior to use to ensure that it is in proper operating condition; checks brakes, mirrors, lights, wipers, belts, hoses, air pressure, fluid levels, etc.
- Performs general and preventive maintenance tasks necessary to keep vehicles, equipment, and tools in operable condition, which may include inspecting equipment, refueling vehicles, checking fluid levels, replacing fluids, greasing equipment, replacing parts, washing or cleaning equipment, checking air, or cleaning shop or work areas; monitors equipment operations to maintain efficiency and safety; reports faulty equipment. Performs minor repairs as needed.
- Loads dump trucks and hauls sand, dirt, clay, asphalt, and other materials to and from work sites.
- May direct traffic control at work sites; flags traffic through work sites; sets up safety cones, barricades, barrels, and signs; assists in maneuvering equipment within work sites.
- Operates a variety of hand and power tools.
- Reads plans and drawings; performs layout, design, and fabrication for projects; insures that all projects are completed according to specifications.
- Locates utilities.
- Clears debris from roads and rights-of-way.
- Hauls equipment and materials to and from work sites.
- Mows county rights-of-way.
- Cuts trees; removes and chips storm debris.
- Patches holes using asphalt or cold patch.
- Cleans culvers and storm drains.
- Assists with snow removal operations.
- Must be available to assist on-call personnel.
- Installs driveway pipes.
- Grades county roads.
- Seals cracks in asphalt.
- Assists in monitoring inventory levels of equipment, tools, and supplies; ensures availability of adequate materials to conduct work activities; initiates requests for new or replacement materials; hauls materials, tools, and equipment.
- Prepares or completes various forms, reports, correspondence, work orders, fuel logs, vehicle/equipment maintenance reports, equipment repair requests, timesheets, or other documents.
- Communicates with supervisor, employees, other departments, the public, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.
- Operates a variety of equipment, including but not limited to:
Motor grader, Asphalt spreader (paver), 70' Bucket Truck, Asphalt Tar Distributor Truck (Tack), Fuel Truck, Herbicide Truck, Milling machine, Gradall and Back Hoe (expert level
2). - Performs related duties.
Performs other related duties as required.
Typical Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
High school diploma or GED; three years of experience in heavy equipment operation in the construction and maintenance of roads; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia appropriate class Commercial Driver's License (CDL) including appropriate endorsement(s).
NOTE: At a minimum, an individual must have a Commercial Driver's License "B" along with proficiency on two of the following types of Heavy Equipment:
Motor grader, Asphalt spreader (paver), 70' Bucket Truck, Asphalt Tar Distributor Truck (Tack), Fuel Truck, Herbicide Truck, Milling machine, Gradall and Back Hoe (expert level
2); or being proficient on the Milling and Paving Machine to be considered a Heavy Equipment Operator II.
