AS​/400 RPG Developer

About the role

We are looking for an experienced AS/400 RPG Developer to lead the design, development, and optimization of IBM i applications. This role will focus on delivering high-quality solutions that enhance system functionality, streamline IT service processes, and support evolving business requirements.

• Lead the design and development of AS/400 RPG applications to meet business needs.
• Oversee the implementation of RPGLE solutions, ensuring adherence to coding best practices and quality standards.
• Provide technical expertise in DB2/400 database management, focusing on performance optimization and data integrity.
• Collaborate with IT service management teams to improve processes and enhance service delivery.
• Analyze system requirements and create detailed technical specifications for new projects.

• Strong proficiency in IBM i (AS/400) environment, including RPG (RPG III, RPG IV / ILE RPG) and CL programming.
• Experience with DB2/400 and SQL for database design, queries, and optimization.
• Hands‑on knowledge of ILE concepts such as service programs, binding directories, and modular programming.
• Expertise in modern RPG techniques (free-format RPG, embedded SQL, modular coding practices).
• Ability to analyze, design, develop, and maintain applications on the IBM i platform.
• Familiarity with integration technologies such as APIs, web services, and data exchange between IBM i and external systems.
• Strong debugging and performance tuning skills for RPG programs and batch processes.
• Understanding of SDLC and Agile methodologies, with experience in version control tools (e.g., Aldon, Turn Over, Git).

• Demonstrated success in leading end-to-end AS/400 application development projects.
• Experience modernizing legacy RPG applications using free-format RPG and embedded SQL.
• Strong collaboration skills with cross‑functional IT service management teams.
• Proven ability to optimize performance in complex IBM i environments.

The annual salary for this position is between $65,447 to $117,000 depending on experience and other qualifications of the successful candidate.
This position is also eligible for Cognizant’s discretionary annual incentive program, based on performance and subject to the terms of Cognizant’s applicable plans.
