POSITIONOVERVIEW
The Facilities Engineer is a hands-on, field-forward role responsible for maintaining the safety, functionality, and brand standards of our retail locations. This position combines practical trade skills with sound technical judgment—performing repairs and preventative maintenance in-house while knowing when to engage qualified vendors for larger or specialized work.
You will be responsible for diagnosing issues, executing basic repairs, clearly documenting conditions, coordinating vendors when required, and seeing every work order through to full close-out. Major repairs, capital expenses, and non-routine costs are elevated to your supervisor for review and approval.
This role is critical to keeping our stores operating smoothly, efficiently, and consistently across markets.
RESPONSIBILITIES- Perform a variety of hands-on trade work, including basic plumbing (faucets/valves/fixtures), HVAC filter changes and light preventative maintenance, basic electrical (light fixtures/lamps/ballasts), and patching/painting/finish touch-ups.
- Conduct routine site walks to identify and address maintenance issues before they escalate.
- Ensure stores consistently meet brand standards for safety, appearance, and functionality.
- Inspect, operate, and test building systems (HVAC, plumbing, electrical, lighting, fixtures) to identify root causes—not just symptoms.
- Determine whether issues can be self-performed or require licensed professionals; elevate as needed.
- Document findings and close-outs clearly with photos, notes, recommended next steps, and concise summaries.
- Track reactive and preventative work orders in the facilities management system (currently Open Wrench).
- Coordinate vendor work when escalation is required: define scope, schedule access, manage site conditions, and review completed work for quality and completeness.
- Maintain cost awareness: complete minor repairs within guidelines; elevate major repairs, recurring failures, or non-routine costs for approval before work proceeds.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with Operations, Construction, Real Estate, and Design teams; coordinate with landlords and property managers as needed.
- Support troubleshooting of low-voltage and technology systems (access control, security cameras, internet/phone) with vendors as required.
- Complete required safety and equipment training (OSHA 10/30 paid by S+B, EPA cert as applicable) and use tools/ladders/equipment in accordance with safety standards and company policy.
- Respond promptly to emergency maintenance situations when required.
- Hands-on experience performing basic plumbing, electrical, mechanical, and carpentry tasks.
- Working knowledge of HVAC systems and routine preventative maintenance practices.
- Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, finish schedules, and equipment documentation.
- Strong understanding of general building systems and maintenance processes.
- Demonstrated ability to assess when to self-perform versus when to call licensed professionals.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills; able to clearly explain issues to vendors, landlords, and internal teams.
- High attention to detail with consistent follow-through on open items.
- Comfortable using facilities management software (e.g., Open Wrench, Service Desk), Gmail, and Google Docs.
- Strong documentation habits (photos, notes, and clear close-out summaries).
- Ability to manage multiple open work orders across locations.
- Good physical stamina and dexterity.
- Ability to lift, climb ladders, and work in active retail environments.
- Competitive benefits package including medical, dental, and vision insurance.
- 401(k) program with company match.
- Paid vacation and holidays.
- Opportunities for career growth, role mobility, and professional development.
