Performs a variety of low-skilled and semi-skilled strenuous labor duties that may involve, but are not limited to, maintenance and repair of streets, storm drains, sewer lines, airport grounds and facilities; construction, repair and maintenance of water/wastewater mains; cleaning of water meters; operating tractors, mowers, and other lawn equipment; maintaining public facilities, lakes, zoo, aquarium and park grounds; asphalt/paving repair; street marking;
collecting garbage/brush; trimming landscape; reservoir facility maintenance; water meter testing and repair; and water/wastewater equipment installation, repair, and maintenance.
The Laborer II performs and provides various semi-skilled manual labor assisting in the cleaning, maintenance and repair of utilities, facilities, airport grounds, water and wastewater mains, landscaping, park grounds, and other public spaces.
Essential Functions- Performs skilled and semi-skilled strenuous labor for various departments, participating in the maintenance, care, repair, and operations of facilities, utilities, public spaces, and landscaping for the City.
- Assists in setting forms, mixing and pouring concrete, spreading and laying asphalt or crack seal for sidewalks, curbs, gutters or streets; assists in laying pipes for storm or sanitary sewers, drains, or water mains.
- Loads and unloads tools, construction material, and equipment onto trucks; provides assistance and works with other Laborers to complete necessary work.
- Operates air/jack hammer to break out old concrete or asphalt when making repairs; drives dump truck, tractor‑driven mowers, or other equipment; performs preventive maintenance on equipment.
- Flags traffic, sets out barricades, cones or other safety devices to help ensure crew and public safety.
- Digs ditches and trenches, grades to specific evaluation; trims, shovels, cuts, and cleans up debris and removes vegetation.
- Assists in cleaning drainage ditches, inlets, storm drains and sewer lines using power‑operated equipment to remove debris or stoppage.
- Cuts grass, removes litter and weeds, cleans floors and facility grounds to maintain upkeep of facilities, street medians, and vacant lots; removes hazards and ensures safety of tenants.
- Performs any and all other trades work as needed or assigned.
- Knowledge of equipment and tools used in various construction repairs.
- Ability to learn to use hand/power tools and other equipment specific to various trades.
- Knowledge of standard colors, configuration, and placement of lane markings and traffic signs.
- Knowledge and understanding of safety procedures.
- Ability to follow drawings, designs, and oral/written instructions from a supervisor.
- Ability to perform manual labor.
- Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships.
