Role OverviewThe Class A Lineman – Overhead is a highly skilled professional responsible for the construction, maintenance, and repair of overhead electrical distribution systems. This position involves working on both energized and de‑energized lines, often in challenging outdoor conditions, while maintaining the highest levels of safety, precision, and efficiency. Core responsibilities include installing and maintaining poles, conductors, transformers, and related equipment; troubleshooting service issues;
and ensuring that all work meets regulatory, safety, and company standards. Experienced linemen may also serve as crew leaders or mentors.
- Perform new construction, maintenance, and repair on overhead electric distribution lines, including stringing wire, setting poles and anchors, installing line hardware (crossarms, insulators, switches, cutouts, lightning arrestors)
- Troubleshoot and repair primary and secondary circuits, replace fuses, and phase out lines
- Climb wood and steel structures safely, work at heights in varied conditions
- Use proper safety gear, PPE, cover‑up, and grounding practices at all times
- Lead and mentor less experienced crew members when needed
- Conduct pre‑job safety briefings, interpret job prints, plans, and work orders
- Maintain tools, vehicles, and equipment in proper working condition
- Operate lifting devices, bucket trucks, diggers, and other equipment as required
- Travel as needed to different project sites and support storm restoration work when called upon
- Work outdoors in all types of weather, at significant heights, around energized electrical lines
- Expect extended hours, storm restoration duty, and on‑call availability as required
- Perform physical labor requiring strength, endurance, and focus on safety
- Several years of overhead line work, ideally with prior experience as a journeyman or Class B lineman
- High school diploma or GED, or equivalent technical training
- Valid driver’s license; CDL preferred depending on project needs
- Ability to lift 50+ lbs, climb poles and structures, work at heights in all weather conditions
- Strong understanding of voltages, phases, grounding, induced voltages, line protection devices
- Commitment to strict safety practices, including PPE use, lockout/tagout, and OSHA compliance
- Effective communication skills, ability to interpret technical documents and work orders
- Willingness to travel or relocate temporarily, and flexibility to work overtime, weekends, and storm response when needed
- Advanced certifications such as CPR/First Aid and safety training preferred
- Experience in both overhead and underground line work preferred
- Prior leadership or foreman experience preferred
- Familiarity with utility standards, codes, compliance requirements preferred
- Experience with advanced line tools and methods preferred
- Exposure to substation or transmission line work preferred
