Works under general direction to provide responsible and skilled technical assistance in performing assignments requiring experience and good knowledge of techniques and practices related to particular field of medical and scientific research. The Nam Laboratory seeks a motivated Research Technician II / Research Assistant I to support studies in RNA biology, RNA chemical modifications, and mechanistic biochemistry in the broader field of gene regulation and cancer biology.
The successful candidate will contribute to ongoing projects through independent execution of molecular biology and biochemical experiments while supporting overall laboratory operations.
This role is well‑suited for individuals seeking rigorous research experience in an academic biomedical setting.
Responsibilities- Perform molecular biology techniques (DNA/RNA purification, PCR, cloning, gel electrophoresis)
- Assist with protein expression and purification
- Conduct RNA biochemistry experiments, including in vitro transcription and enzymatic assays
- Prepare reagents and maintain organized laboratory records
- Assist with data analysis and documentation
Maintain laboratory inventory and ensure compliance with safety regulations
- Bachelor’s degree in biochemistry, molecular biology, chemistry, or related field
- 1–2 years of relevant laboratory experience (academic or industry) preferred
- Demonstrated proficiency in basic molecular biology techniques
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail

- Master’s degree with major coursework in the field of assignment; no experience required.
- Bachelor’s degree with major coursework in the field of assignment; or completion of two years of college with emphasis in coursework in the field of assignment; or high school diploma or GED equivalent.
- Research experience: 1 year as Research Technician or equivalent with a Bachelor’s degree; or 4 years of research experience including two years at level of Research Technician or equivalent with 2 years of college; or 6 years of research experience with a high school diploma or GED equivalent including 2 years at level of Research Technician or equivalent.
- Performs more difficult scientific and medical research work in biology, chemistry, physics, or other related scientific fields.
- Constructs, assembles, and operates laboratory equipment and apparatus.
- Records and evaluates data obtained from work assignments for use in scientific papers.
- Collaborates with supervisor or other research personnel in preparation of scientific papers for publication.
- Reads literature and confers with supervisor concerning procedures and implementation.
- Collects and organizes research data for project reports.
- May plan for, and provide working supervision to, work of Research Technicians or other laboratory personnel of lower grade.
